God is the true object of. Psa. 65:5⁵By terrible things in righteousness wilt thou answer us, O God of our salvation; who art the confidence of all the ends of the earth, and of them that are afar off upon the sea: (Psalm 65:5).

The fear of God leads to. Prov. 14:26²⁶In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge. (Proverbs 14:26).

ENCOURAGEMENTS TO;

The everlasting strength of God. Isa. 26:4⁴Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord JEHOVAH is everlasting strength: (Isaiah 26:4).

The goodness of God. Nah. 1:7⁷The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him. (Nahum 1:7).

The loving-kindness of God. Psa. 36:7.

The rich bounty of God. 1 Tim. 6:17¹⁷Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; (1 Timothy 6:17).

The care of God for us. 1 Peter 5:7⁷Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. (1 Peter 5:7).

Former deliverances. Psa. 9:10¹⁰And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee. (Psalm 9:10). 2 Cor. 1:10¹⁰Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us; (2 Corinthians 1:10).

Should be with the whole heart. Prov. 3:5⁵Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5).

Should be from youth up. Psa. 71:5⁵For thou art my hope, O Lord God: thou art my trust from my youth. (Psalm 71:5).

OF SAINTS IS

Not in the flesh. Phi. 3:3, 4.

Not in themselves. 2 Cor. 1:9⁹But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: (2 Corinthians 1:9).

Not in carnal weapons. 1 Sam. 17:38, 39, 45³⁸And Saul armed David with his armor, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail. ³⁹And David girded his sword upon his armor, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him. (1 Samuel 17:38‑39)
⁴⁵Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. (1 Samuel 17:45). Psa. 44:6⁶For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me. (Psalm 44:6). 2 Cor. 10:4⁴(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) (2 Corinthians 10:4).

In God. Psa. 11:1¹<<To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.>> In the Lord put I my trust: how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain? (Psalm 11:1). Psa. 31:14¹⁴But I trusted in thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my God. (Psalm 31:14). 2 Cor. 1:9⁹But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: (2 Corinthians 1:9).

In the word of God. Psa. 119:42⁴²So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word. (Psalm 119:42).

In the mercy of God. Psa. 13:5⁵But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. (Psalm 13:5). Psa. 52:8⁸But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever. (Psalm 52:8).

In Christ. Eph. 3:12¹²In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him. (Ephesians 3:12).

Through Christ. 2 Cor. 3:4⁴And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward: (2 Corinthians 3:4).

Grounded on the covenant. 2 Sam. 23:5⁵Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow. (2 Samuel 23:5).

Strong in the prospect of death. Psa. 23:4⁴Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4).

Fixed. 2 Sam. 22:3³The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence. (2 Samuel 22:3). Psa. 112:7⁷He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord. (Psalm 112:7).

Unalterable. Job 13:15¹⁵Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him. (Job 13:15).

Despised by the wicked. Isa. 36:4, 7⁴And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest? (Isaiah 36:4)
⁷But if thou say to me, We trust in the Lord our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar? (Isaiah 36:7).

Forever. Psa. 52:8⁸But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever. (Psalm 52:8). Psa. 62:8⁸Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah. (Psalm 62:8). Isa. 26:4⁴Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord JEHOVAH is everlasting strength: (Isaiah 26:4).

Saints plead, in prayer. Psa. 25:20²⁰O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee. (Psalm 25:20). Psa. 31:1¹<<To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.>> In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness. (Psalm 31:1). Psa. 141:8⁸But mine eyes are unto thee, O God the Lord: in thee is my trust; leave not my soul destitute. (Psalm 141:8).

The Lord knows those who have. Nah. 1:7⁷The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him. (Nahum 1:7).

Exhortations to. Psa. 4:5⁵Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the Lord. (Psalm 4:5). Psa. 115:9-11⁹O Israel, trust thou in the Lord: he is their help and their shield. ¹⁰O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord: he is their help and their shield. ¹¹Ye that fear the Lord, trust in the Lord: he is their help and their shield. (Psalm 115:9‑11).

LEADS TO

Being compassed with mercy. Psa. 32:10¹⁰Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the Lord, mercy shall compass him about. (Psalm 32:10).

Enjoyment of perfect peace. Isa. 26:3³Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. (Isaiah 26:3).

Enjoyment of all temporal and spiritual blessings. Isa. 57:13¹³When thou criest, let thy companies deliver thee; but the wind shall carry them all away; vanity shall take them: but he that putteth his trust in me shall possess the land, and shall inherit my holy mountain; (Isaiah 57:13).

Enjoyment of happiness. Prov. 16:20²⁰He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the Lord, happy is he. (Proverbs 16:20).

Rejoicing in God. Psa. 5:11¹¹But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee. (Psalm 5:11). Psa. 33:21²¹For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. (Psalm 33:21).

Fulfillment of all holy desires. Psa. 37:5⁵Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. (Psalm 37:5).

Deliverance from enemies. Psa. 37:40⁴⁰And the Lord shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him. (Psalm 37:40).

Safety in times of danger. Prov. 29:25²⁵The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe. (Proverbs 29:25).

Stability. Psa. 125:1¹<<A Song of degrees.>> They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever. (Psalm 125:1).

Prosperity. Prov. 28:25²⁵He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the Lord shall be made fat. (Proverbs 28:25).

KEEPS FROM

Fear. Psa. 56:11¹¹In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me. (Psalm 56:11). Isa. 12:2²Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. (Isaiah 12:2). Heb. 13:6⁶So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. (Hebrews 13:6).

Sliding. Psa. 26:1¹<<A Psalm of David.>> Judge me, O Lord; for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the Lord; therefore I shall not slide. (Psalm 26:1).

Desolation. Psa. 34:22²²The Lord redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate. (Psalm 34:22).

To be accompanied by doing good. Psa. 37:3³Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. (Psalm 37:3).

Blessedness of placing, in God. Psa. 2:12¹²Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. (Psalm 2:12). Psa. 34:8⁸O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. (Psalm 34:8). Psa. 40:4⁴Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. (Psalm 40:4). Jer. 17:7.

OF THE WICKED

Is not in God. Psa. 78:22²²Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation: (Psalm 78:22). Zeph. 3:2²She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the Lord; she drew not near to her God. (Zephaniah 3:2).

Is in idols. Isa. 42:17¹⁷They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images, that say to the molten images, Ye are our gods. (Isaiah 42:17). Hab. 2:18¹⁸What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols? (Habakkuk 2:18).

Is in man. Judg. 9:26²⁶And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him. (Judges 9:26). Psa. 118:8, 9⁸It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. ⁹It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes. (Psalm 118:8‑9).

Is in their own heart. Prov. 28:26²⁶He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered. (Proverbs 28:26).

Is in their own righteousness. Luke 18:9, 12⁹And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: (Luke 18:9)
¹²I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. (Luke 18:12).

Is in vanity. Job 15:31³¹Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence. (Job 15:31). Isa. 59:4⁴None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity. (Isaiah 59:4).

Is in falsehood. Isa. 28:15¹⁵Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves: (Isaiah 28:15). Jer. 13:25²⁵This is thy lot, the portion of thy measures from me, saith the Lord; because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood. (Jeremiah 13:25).

Is in earthly alliances. Isa. 30:2²That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt! (Isaiah 30:2). Ezek. 17:15¹⁵But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and much people. Shall he prosper? shall he escape that doeth such things? or shall he break the covenant, and be delivered? (Ezekiel 17:15).

Is in wealth. Psa. 49:6⁶They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; (Psalm 49:6). Psa. 52:7⁷Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness. (Psalm 52:7). Prov. 11:28²⁸He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch. (Proverbs 11:28). Jer. 48:7⁷For because thou hast trusted in thy works and in thy treasures, thou shalt also be taken: and Chemosh shall go forth into captivity with his priests and his princes together. (Jeremiah 48:7). Mar. 10:24.

Is vain and delusive. Isa. 30:7⁷For the Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I cried concerning this, Their strength is to sit still. (Isaiah 30:7). Jer. 2:37³⁷Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the Lord hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them. (Jeremiah 2:37).

Shall make them ashamed. Isa. 20:5⁵And they shall be afraid and ashamed of Ethiopia their expectation, and of Egypt their glory. (Isaiah 20:5). Isa. 30:3, 5³Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion. (Isaiah 30:3)
⁵They were all ashamed of a people that could not profit them, nor be an help nor profit, but a shame, and also a reproach. (Isaiah 30:5). Jer. 48:13¹³And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Beth-el their confidence. (Jeremiah 48:13).

Shall be destroyed. Job 18:14¹⁴His confidence shall be rooted out of his tabernacle, and it shall bring him to the king of terrors. (Job 18:14). Isa. 28:18¹⁸And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it. (Isaiah 28:18).

Woe and curse of false. Isa. 30:1, 2¹Woe to the rebellious children, saith the Lord, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin: ²That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt! (Isaiah 30:1‑2). Isa. 31:1-3¹Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the Lord! ²Yet he also is wise, and will bring evil, and will not call back his words: but will arise against the house of the evildoers, and against the help of them that work iniquity. ³Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When the Lord shall stretch out his hand, both he that helpeth shall fall, and he that is holpen shall fall down, and they all shall fail together. (Isaiah 31:1‑3). Jer. 17:5⁵Thus saith the Lord; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord. (Jeremiah 17:5).

Of saints-Illustrated. Psa. 91:12¹²They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. (Psalm 91:12). Prov. 18:10¹⁰The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe. (Proverbs 18:10).

Paul, 2 Tim. 1:12¹²For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. Of the wicked-Exemplified. Goliath, 1 Sam. 17:43-45. Benhadad, 1 Kin. 20:10, Sennacherib, 2 Chr. 32:8⁸With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah. (2 Chronicles 32:8). Israelites, Isa. 31:1¹Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the Lord! (Isaiah 31:1).
