84. We Hear the Words of Love

S.M.
by H. Bonar
1
We hear the words of love,

We gaze upon the blood,

We see the mighty sacrifice,

And we have peace with God.
2
’Tis everlasting peace!

Sure as Jehovah’s name;

’Tis stable as His steadfast throne,

Forevermore the same.
3
Our love is ofttimes low,

Our joy still ebbs and flows;

But peace with Him remains the same,

No change Jehovah knows.
4
We change — He changes not;

Our Christ can never die:

His love, not ours, the resting-place,

We on His truth rely.
“For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” (Malachi 3:6)
“And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David. Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption. But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.” (Acts 13:34-37)
“We love him, because he first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)
5
The cross still stands unchanged,

Though heaven is now His home;

The mighty stone is rolled away,

But yonder is His tomb!
“And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.” (Luke 24:2-3)
6
And yonder is our peace,

The grave of all our woes;

We know the Son of God has come,

We know He died and rose.
“Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God.” (1 John 4:2)
“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures. And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)
7
We know He liveth now

At God’s right hand above;

We know the throne on which He sits,

We know His truth and love!
“I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” (Revelation 1:18)
“Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.” (Hebrews 1:3)
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)
