Ezekiel 19:4
4
The nations also heard of him; he was taken in their pit, and they brought him with chains unto the land of Egypt. (Ezekiel 19:4)
. The nations also heard of him, he was taken in their pit.
There is thought to be an allusion here to the custom of assembling for the capture of a lion or other wild beast when the news of its depredations goes forth. All who hear of it are expected to aid in the capture.
The special mode of capture referred to in this text is by means of the pitfall. A hole is dug in the ground, and covered over with the branches of trees and with sod. The animal treading on this slight covering is precipitated into the pit, where it is either taken out alive or killed by the hunters on their arrival.
Figurative allusion is made to the pitfall in
Psalm 7:15; 9:15; 35:7; 94:13
15
He made a pit, and digged it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made. (Psalm 7:15)
15
The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken. (Psalm 9:15)
7
For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit, which without cause they have digged for my soul. (Psalm 35:7)
13
That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked. (Psalm 94:13)
;
Proverbs 26:27
27
Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him. (Proverbs 26:27)
;
Isaiah 38:17
17
Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back. (Isaiah 38:17)
