Amos 5:26
26
But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves. (Amos 5:26)
. Ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.
1. For a description of Moloch, see note on
Leviticus 18:21
21
And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the Lord. (Leviticus 18:21)
(#163).
2. The majority of those interpreters who suppose Chiun to be a proper name take it to mean the planet Saturn. The Septuagint has ‘Pαιφάν, which afterward became corrupted to ‘Pευφάν, and is so used by Stephen in
Acts 7:43
43
Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon. (Acts 7:43)
. Some have assumed that ‘Pαιφάν, was an Egyptian name of the planet Saturn, but others have denied this. Some commentators suppose that the word is not a proper name, but merely signifies a statue, an idol, or a pedestal on which an idol might be placed.
