53*. Alas! and Did My Savior Bleed

C.M.
by I. Watts
1
Alas! and did my Savior bleed!

And did my Savior die?

Would He devote that sacred head

For such a worm as I?
“Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the Lord, and thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.” (Isaiah 41:14)
2
Was it for crimes that I have done

He groaned upon the tree?

Amazing pity, grace unknown,

And love beyond degree!
3
Well might the sun in darkness hide,

And shut his glories in,

When the Incarnate Maker died

For man His creature’s sin.
“Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.” (Matthew 27:45)
“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (John 1:3)
“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)
