Mr. Hansen backed slowly away from the alligator he had almost run into. He was a home inspector and he had been called to inspect a home that was undergoing some construction. Up in the third-floor attic he had noticed what looked like a stuffed alligator in the dim light — perhaps a toy for a child, he thought and continued on with his job. But then he saw the “toy” blink! That eight-foot “toy” was a real live alligator!
The alligator must have been asleep, as he wasn’t moving, when he first got up to the attic, and he thought it wasn’t real. But then he shone his flashlight on him, and the alligator gave him a wink, letting him know he was very much alive.
Mr. Hansen had to persuade people that there was that dangerous reptile in the attic. When he did, he and his coworkers all left the home and called the animal control officers. They decided that since a door to the house had been left open during the weekend, the alligator must have made his way into the house, climbed the stairs to the attic and there he was when Mr. Hansen arrived. Mr. Hansen had come across a few dangerous kinds of animals in his work but he had never before seen an alligator in an attic!
Children, this story makes me think of how we have an enemy that the Bible refers to as a “roaring lion” who walks about “seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:88Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: (1 Peter 5:8)). No one got hurt in this story but very many have gotten hurt by that roaring lion! That roaring lion is Satan himself and he is your enemy. He doesn’t want you to believe the gospel message that the Lord Jesus has come from heaven, died on the cross for you, rose again, and made the way for you to belong to the family of God. Satan would love to make you think that the Bible is not true and then drag you to hell.
