The Safe Way

If you had been driving through the town of Amherst, Massachusetts, one warm, rainy evening in April many years ago, you might have seen a group of people standing in the rain by the edge of the road.
“Why is everybody standing out here getting wet?” you might have asked someone.
“We’re standing out here to see if the salamanders crawl through the tunnels,” that person would have answered.
“What tunnels?”
“Those tunnels over there,” your new friend would say, pointing a short distance away to some small tunnels going under the road. “We put them in this winter and we have been waiting until now to see if the salamanders would go through them after they woke up from their winter’s hibernation.”
“Why can’t they just walk across the road?”
“That’s what they have always done, but so many of them got run over by cars that we decided to do something about it. We had these tunnels dug under the road so that the salamanders would have a safe way to get to the other side of the highway.”
“See, here comes another salamander out of the woods. He’s headed right for the tunnels  ... oh no  ... he’s going right by them,” says your friend.
“It looks like he doesn’t know what’s good for him,” you reply.
“Nope, hardly any of them do. Out of 50 salamanders crossing so far this evening, only one of them has used a tunnel.”
This story about something that really happened is a picture to us of another very important fact.
God also has a safe way for you to walk through life and to get to heaven. Maybe you have accepted the Lord Jesus as your Savior. That is wonderful! But it is like taking the first right step on a long journey through life. Are you also walking in the way that will take you safely to the Lord Jesus in heaven, without experiencing the dangers of this world? That way is in obedience to the Bible. For example, the Bible says, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right” (Ephesians 6:11Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. (Ephesians 6:1)). The Lord has given many of us parents to help us learn to walk safely through our lives. The Lord also promises, “I will  ... teach [you] in the way which [you shall] go, I will guide [you] with [My] eye” (Psalm 32:88I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. (Psalm 32:8)). Even if your parents don’t love the Lord Jesus or you don’t live with your parents, the Lord is always with you, and He promises to guide you all through your life, if you look to Him.
