Kay was afraid. Her big sister, Sarah, her baby sister Nellie, her sister Michelle, and a friend of Michelle’s named Sally were all somewhere not too far off. But she didn’t care about any of them right now. Her house was on fire, she was only six years old, and she wanted to find her daddy. She knew he would save her.
Sarah was afraid too. She had been babysitting while her parents were out on a date, and now, all the girls were playing upstairs, and she was having some peace and quiet. Downstairs, in the front room, she suddenly noticed that the house was on fire! She called her parents and told them the house was on fire and they were all in the house. Then she raced upstairs to grab baby Nellie, found the two older girls, and was heading back down the stairs. But ... where was Kay?
A man named John was out for a drive that quiet summer night. The night air was cool as it entered his car window, and it was clearing his head after a tough evening. All seemed peaceful and quiet. But then his peaceful ride was interrupted. He spotted a two-story house on fire! There were no firemen there to help, either! Quickly parking his car, he raced into the house.
He ran into Sarah coming down the stairs holding Nellie. Sarah told John that she couldn’t find Kay. First, he helped the four girls who were there to get outside to safety. Then he took a deep breath and ran back inside the burning house to search for Kay. The smoke made it hard to see anything as he stumbled through the unfamiliar house. But finally he heard Kay! She was still looking for her daddy. Because of the smoke filling the first floor, John had to go upstairs, break a window and jump down to safety, holding Kay in his arms. John was hurt rather badly, but he held onto Kay tightly and she only got a little cut on her foot.
John handed Kay to the police, who had arrived by then, and then he collapsed. They started helping him, but his only question was, “Is the baby okay? Please tell me the baby’s okay.” Someone was able to tell him that Kay was fine ... safe because of his quick and brave actions.
Almost everything in the house was burned up, but there was a plaque that had hung on the living room wall that survived the fire. It only had one word on it: “Love.” That was what Kay’s parents felt from everyone, and especially from John. They said he was now part of their family.
Wasn’t that brave of John? He said that he only did what he would want someone to do for him if his house was on fire. And he kept reminding himself that it was only a small sacrifice. The pain would only last a little while, and he said, “It was so worth it.”
Isn’t that nice? His words remind me of Someone who loved me enough to endure terrible suffering and to die in order to save me. He thought it was worth it, too. That One is the Lord Jesus. “The Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:2020I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20)). Did you know that He loves you, too, and died for you, if you will trust Him as your Savior? He made a huge sacrifice, dying on a terribly painful cross, suffering all the horrible judgment from God that our sins deserve, and yet He loves us so much that He thinks it was worth it. “He shall see of the travail [hard work] of His soul, and shall be satisfied” (Isaiah 53:1111He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. (Isaiah 53:11)). I hope you have believed on Him as your own Savior, so He can be “satisfied” when He looks at you, too. And, like the Jones family made John a part of their family because he had saved the girls from the fire, I hope you have made the Lord Jesus the Lord of your life, because He loved you so much!
