Arrows.

Deadly and destructive weapons. Pro. 26:18¹⁸As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death, (Proverbs 26:18).

Called shafts. Isa. 49:2²And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me; (Isaiah 49:2).

Sharp. Psa. 120:4⁴Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper. (Psalm 120:4). Isa. 5:28²⁸Whose arrows are sharp, and all their bows bent, their horses' hoofs shall be counted like flint, and their wheels like a whirlwind: (Isaiah 5:28).

Brig and polished. Isa. 49:2²And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me; (Isaiah 49:2). Jer. 51:11¹¹Make bright the arrows; gather the shields: the Lord hath raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes: for his device is against Babylon, to destroy it; because it is the vengeance of the Lord, the vengeance of his temple. (Jeremiah 51:11).

Sometimes poisoned. Job 6:4⁴For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me. (Job 6:4).

Carried in a quiver. Gen. 27:3³Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; (Genesis 27:3). Isa. 49:2²And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me; (Isaiah 49:2). Jer. 5:16¹⁶Their quiver is as an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men. (Jeremiah 5:16). Lam. 3:13¹³He hath caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins. (Lamentations 3:13).

DISCHARGED

From engines. Psa. 112. Isa. 7:24²⁴With arrows and with bows shall men come thither; because all the land shall become briers and thorns. (Isaiah 7:24).

From engines. 2 Chr. 26:15¹⁵And he made in Jerusalem engines, invented by cunning men, to be on the towers and upon the bulwarks, to shoot arrows and great stones withal. And his name spread far abroad; for he was marvellously helped, till he was strong. (2 Chronicles 26:15).

At a mark for amusement. 1 Sam. 20:20-22²⁰And I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof, as though I shot at a mark. ²¹And, behold, I will send a lad, saying, Go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee, take them; then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no hurt; as the Lord liveth. ²²But if I say thus unto the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee; go thy way: for the Lord hath sent thee away. (1 Samuel 20:20‑22).

At the beasts of the earth. Gen. 27:3³Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; (Genesis 27:3).

Against enemies. 2 Kin. 19:32. Jer. 50:14¹⁴Put yourselves in array against Babylon round about: all ye that bend the bow, shoot at her, spare no arrows: for she hath sinned against the Lord. (Jeremiah 50:14).

With great force. Num. 24:8⁸God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows. (Numbers 24:8). 2 Kin. 9:24.

Fleetness of, alluded to. Zec. 9:14¹⁴And the Lord shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning: and the Lord God shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with whirlwinds of the south. (Zechariah 9:14).

The ancients divined by. Eze. 21:21²¹For the king of Babylon stood at the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use divination: he made his arrows bright, he consulted with images, he looked in the liver. (Ezekiel 21:21).

ILLUSTRATIVE

Of Christ. Isa. 49:2²And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me; (Isaiah 49:2).

Of the word of Christ. Psa. 45:5⁵Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the king's enemies; whereby the people fall under thee. (Psalm 45:5).

Of God's judgment. Deu. 32:23-42. Psa. 7:13¹³He hath also prepared for him the instruments of death; he ordaineth his arrows against the persecutors. (Psalm 7:13). Psa. 21:12¹²Therefore shalt thou make them turn their back, when thou shalt make ready thine arrows upon thy strings against the face of them. (Psalm 21:12). Psa. 64:7⁷But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded. (Psalm 64:7). Eze. 5:16¹⁶When I shall send upon them the evil arrows of famine, which shall be for their destruction, and which I will send to destroy you: and I will increase the famine upon you, and will break your staff of bread: (Ezekiel 5:16).

Of severe afflictions. Job 6:4⁴For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me. (Job 6:4). Psa. 38:2²For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore. (Psalm 38:2).

Of bitter words. Psa. 64:3³Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words: (Psalm 64:3).

Of slanderous tongues. Jer. 9:8⁸Their tongue is as an arrow shot out; it speaketh deceit: one speaketh peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth, but in heart he layeth his wait. (Jeremiah 9:8).

Of false witnesses. Pro. 25:18¹⁸A man that beareth false witness against his neighbor is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow. (Proverbs 25:18).

Of devices of the wicked. Psa. 11:2²For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart. (Psalm 11:2).

Of young children. Psa. 127:4⁴As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. (Psalm 127:4).

Of lightnings. Psa. 77:17, 18¹⁷The clouds poured out water: the skies sent out a sound: thine arrows also went abroad. ¹⁸The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook. (Psalm 77:17‑18). Hab. 3:11¹¹The sun and moon stood still in their habitation: at the light of thine arrows they went, and at the shining of thy glittering spear. (Habakkuk 3:11).

(Broken), of destruction of power. Psa. 76:3³There brake he the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah. (Psalm 76:3).

(Falling from the hand), of the paralyzing power. Eze. 39:3³And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand. (Ezekiel 39:3).
