321. Behold the Lamb, Whose Precious Blood

C.M.
by W. Trotter
1
Behold the Lamb, whose precious blood

Drawn from His riven side,

Had power to make our peace with God,

Nor lets one spot abide.
“The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29)
“And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!” (John 1:36)
“But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” (1 Peter 1:19)
“But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.” (John 19:34)
“And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savor.” (Ephesians 5:2)
“And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.” (Colossians 1:20)
2
The dying thief beheld that Lamb

Expiring by his side,

And proved the value of the name

Of Jesus crucified.
“And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:38-43)
3
His soul, by virtue of the blood,

To paradise received,

Redemption’s earliest trophy stood,

From sin and death retrieved.
4
We, too, the cleansing power have known

Of the atoning blood,

By grace have learnt His name to own,

Which brings us back to God.
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7)
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)
5
To Him, then, let our songs ascend,

Who stooped in grace so low:

To Christ, the Lamb, the sinner’s Friend,

Let ceaseless praises flow.
“For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.” (2 Corinthians 8:9)
“The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!” (Luke 7:34)
