236. O Gracious Father! God of Love

C.M.
by P. Doddridge, 1739
1
O gracious Father! God of love,

We own Thy power to save,

That power by which the Shepherd rose

Victorious o’er the grave.
“But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.” (Psalm 86:15)
“Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.” (2 Corinthians 13:11)
“For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” (1 Corinthians 1:21)
“Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant.” (Hebrews 13:20)
2
Him from the dead Thou brought’st again,

When, by His sacred blood,

Confirmed and sealed forevermore,

Th’ eternal cov’nant stood.
3
Oh may Thy Spirit guide our souls,

And mold them to Thy will,

That from Thy paths we ne’er may stray,

But keep Thy precepts still!
“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.” (John 16:13)
“Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.” (John 14:23)
4
That to the Savior’s stature full

We nearer still may rise,

And all we think, and all we do

Be pleasing in Thine eyes.
