As we set ourselves to pray there must be a remembrance of the conditions of prevailing prayer. They are such as these:
(1) Heart separation from Sin— “If I regard iniquity in my heart the Lord will not hear me” (
Psa. 66:18
18
If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me: (Psalm 66:18)
).
(2) Righteousness— “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much”
(
James 5:16
16
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. (James 5:16)
).
(3) Faith— “He that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him” (
Heb. 11:6
6
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Hebrews 11:6)
).
(4) Submission— “If we ask anything according to His will, He heareth us” (
1 John 5:14
14
And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: (1 John 5:14)
).
(5) Thankfulness— “In everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God” (
Phil. 4:6
6
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. (Philippians 4:6)
).
In addition to these let us ever remember that prayer, to prevail, must be God wrought. It must be “in the Holy Ghost,” and in the name of the Lord Jesus.
