vile unto thee.That is, be beaten so cruelly, that, by retaining the marks, he become contemptible in the eyes of his brethren. Amendment, and not this, was the object of the punishment.
We should hate and despise the sin, but not the sinner.
 Stripes may be due and needful; but there must be nothing to destroy respect. Jehovah finds His own interest in all the belongings of His people, and He would train up in His own nurture and admonition. (Deuteronomy 25 by W. Kelly)
