Fragments: Justification and Holiness Mingled With Affection

Note the way in which justification and holiness are mingled with blessed affection when it is in the way of grace—when they are required, this cannot be. It is all very right. But grace will say, 'Who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and'—not purify from evil—but ‘purify to Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.' Compare Eph. 5:25, 26, 27²⁵Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; ²⁶That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, ²⁷That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. (Ephesians 5:25‑27); and Rev. 21:27²⁷And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life. (Revelation 21:27).
