Goat, the.

Clean and fit for food. Deut. 14:4, 5⁴These are the beasts which ye shall eat: the ox, the sheep, and the goat, ⁵The hart, and the roebuck, and the fallow deer, and the wild goat, and the pygarg, and the wild ox, and the chamois. (Deuteronomy 14:4‑5).

Offered in sacrifice. Gen. 15:9⁹And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon. (Genesis 15:9). Lev. 16:5, 7⁵And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering. (Leviticus 16:5)
⁷And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. (Leviticus 16:7).

The male, best for sacrifice. Lev. 22:19¹⁹Ye shall offer at your own will a male without blemish, of the beeves, of the sheep, or of the goats. (Leviticus 22:19). Psa. 50:9⁹I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds. (Psalm 50:9).

First-born of, not redeemed. Num. 18:17¹⁷But the firstling of a cow, or the firstling of a sheep, or the firstling of a goat, thou shalt not redeem; they are holy: thou shalt sprinkle their blood upon the altar, and shalt burn their fat for an offering made by fire, for a sweet savor unto the Lord. (Numbers 18:17).

Jews had large flocks of. Gen. 32:14¹⁴Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams, (Genesis 32:14). 1 Sam. 25:2²And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel. (1 Samuel 25:2).

Most profitable to the owner. Pro. 27:26²⁶The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field. (Proverbs 27:26).

Milk of, used as food. Prov. 27:27²⁷And thou shalt have goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens. (Proverbs 27:27),

THE YOUNG OF

Called kids. Gen. 37:31³¹And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood; (Genesis 37:31).

Kept in small flocks. 1 Kin. 20

Fed near the shepherds' tents. SoS. 1:8.

Not to be seethed in tank mother. Ex. 23:19¹⁹The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk. (Exodus 23:19).

Offered in sacrifice. Loy. 4 Lev. 5:6⁶And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the Lord for his sin which he hath sinned, a female from the flock, a lamb or a kid of the goats, for a sin offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his sin. (Leviticus 5:6).

Offered at the passover. Ex. 12:5⁵Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: (Exodus 12:5). 2 Chr. 35:7⁷And Josiah gave to the people, of the flock, lambs and kids, all for the passover offerings, for all that were present, to the number of thirty thousand, and three thousand bullocks: these were of the king's substance. (2 Chronicles 35:7).

Considered a delicacy. Gen. 27:9⁹Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savory meat for thy father, such as he loveth: (Genesis 27:9). Judg. 6:19¹⁹And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it. (Judges 6:19).

Given as a present. Gen. 38:17¹⁷And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it? (Genesis 38:17). Judg. 15:1¹But it came to pass within a while after, in the time of wheat harvest, that Samson visited his wife with a kid; and he said, I will go in to my wife into the chamber. But her father would not suffer him to go in. (Judges 15:1).

THE HAIR OF

Offered for tabernacle. Exo. 25:4⁴And blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats' hair, (Exodus 25:4). Exo. 35:23²³And every man, with whom was found blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats' hair, and red skins of rams, and badgers' skins, brought them. (Exodus 35:23).

Made into curtains, for covering the tabernacle. Ex. 35:26²⁶And all the women whose heart stirred them up in wisdom spun goats' hair. (Exodus 35:26). Ess. 36:14-18.

Made into pillows. 1 Sam. 19:4⁴And Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hath not sinned against thee, and because his works have been to thee-ward very good: (1 Samuel 19:4)

Skin of, often used as clothing. Heb. 11:87.

Bashan celebrated for. Deut. 32:14¹⁴Butter of kine, and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the fat of kidneys of wheat; and thou didst drink the pure blood of the grape. (Deuteronomy 32:14)

The Arabians traded in. Eze. 27:21²¹Arabia, and all the princes of Kedar, they occupied with thee in lambs, and rams, and goats: in these were they thy merchants. (Ezekiel 27:21).

Flocks of, always led by a male. Jer. 50:8⁸Remove out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he goats before the flocks. (Jeremiah 50:8).

When wild dwelt in the hills and rocks. 1 Sam. 24:2²Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats. (1 Samuel 24:2). Job 391, Psa. 104:18¹⁸The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats; and the rocks for the conies. (Psalm 104:18).

ILLUSTRATIVE

Of Macedonian empire. Dan. 8:5, 21⁵And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes. (Daniel 8:5)
²¹And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king. (Daniel 8:21).

Of the wicked. Zech. 10:3³Mine anger was kindled against the shepherds, and I punished the goats: for the Lord of hosts hath visited his flock the house of Judah, and hath made them as his goodly horse in the battle. (Zechariah 10:3). Matt. 25:32, 33³²And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: ³³And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. (Matthew 25:32‑33).
