A green herb. Mar. 6:39.

CALLED

Grass of the earth. Rev. 9:4⁴And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. (Revelation 9:4).

Grass of the field. Num. 22:4⁴And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time. (Numbers 22:4).

Springs out of the earth. 2 Sam. 23:4⁴And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain. (2 Samuel 23:4).

GOD

Originally created. Gen. 1:11, 12¹¹And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. ¹²And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:11‑12).

The giver of. Deut. 11:15¹⁵And I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle, that thou mayest eat and be full. (Deuteronomy 11:15).

Causes to grow. Psa. 104:14¹⁴He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth; (Psalm 104:14). Psa. 147:8⁸Who covereth the heaven with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth, who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains. (Psalm 147:8).

Adorns and clothes. Matt. 6:30³⁰Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? (Matthew 6:30).

Often grew on the tops of houses. Psa. 129:6⁶Let them be as the grass upon the housetops, which withereth afore it groweth up: (Psalm 129:6).

When young, soft and tender. Prov. 27:25²⁵The hay appeareth, and the tender grass showeth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered. (Proverbs 27:25).

Refreshed by rain and dew. Deut. 32:2²My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass: (Deuteronomy 32:2). Prov. 19:12¹²The king's wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favor is as dew upon the grass. (Proverbs 19:12).

Cattle fed upon. Job 6:5⁵Doth the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or loweth the ox over his fodder? (Job 6:5). Jer. 50:11¹¹Because ye were glad, because ye rejoiced, O ye destroyers of mine heritage, because ye are grown fat as the heifer at grass, and bellow as bulls; (Jeremiah 50:11).

Ovens often heated with. Matt. 6:30³⁰Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? (Matthew 6:30).

DESTROYED BY

Locusts. Rev. 9:4⁴And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. (Revelation 9:4).

Hail and lightning. Rev. 8:7⁷The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up. (Revelation 8:7).

Drought. 1 Kin. 17:1, with 1 Kin. 18:5.

Failure of, a great calamity. Isa. 15:5, 6⁵My heart shall cry out for Moab; his fugitives shall flee unto Zoar, an heifer of three years old: for by the mounting up of Luhith with weeping shall they go it up; for in the way of Horonaim they shall raise up a cry of destruction. ⁶For the waters of Nimrim shall be desolate: for the hay is withered away, the grass faileth, there is no green thing. (Isaiah 15:5‑6).

Sufferings of cattle from failure of, described. Jer. 14:5, 6⁵Yea, the hind also calved in the field, and forsook it, because there was no grass. ⁶And the wild asses did stand in the high places, they snuffed up the wind like dragons; their eyes did fail, because there was no grass. (Jeremiah 14:5‑6).

ILLUSTRATIVE

Of shortness and uncertainty of life. Psa. 90:5, 6⁵Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up. ⁶In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth. (Psalm 90:5‑6). Psa. 103:15¹⁵As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. (Psalm 103:15). Isa. 40:6, 7⁶The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: ⁷The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. (Isaiah 40:6‑7). 1 Peter 1:24²⁴For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: (1 Peter 1:24).

Of prosperity of the wicked. Psa. 92:7⁷When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they shall be destroyed for ever: (Psalm 92:7).

(Refreshed by dew and showers,) of saints refreshed by grace. Psa. 72:6⁶He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth. (Psalm 72:6). Mic. 5:7⁷And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many people as a dew from the Lord, as the showers upon the grass, that tarrieth not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of men. (Micah 5:7).

(On tops of houses,) of the wicked. 2 Kin. 19:26. Isa. 37:27²⁷Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded: they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up. (Isaiah 37:27).
