Found in the earth. Job 28:1, 6¹Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they fine it. (Job 28:1)
⁶The stones of it are the place of sapphires: and it hath dust of gold. (Job 28:6).

ABOUNDED IN

Havilah. Gen. 2:11¹¹The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; (Genesis 2:11).

Ophir. 1 Kings 9:28²⁸And they came to Ophir, and fetched from thence gold, four hundred and twenty talents, and brought it to king Solomon. (1 Kings 9:28). Psa. 45:9⁹Kings' daughters were among thy honorable women: upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir. (Psalm 45:9).

Sheba. Psa. 72:15¹⁵And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba: prayer also shall be made for him continually; and daily shall he be praised. (Psalm 72:15). Isa. 60:6⁶The multitude of camels shall cover thee, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; all they from Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and incense; and they shall show forth the praises of the Lord. (Isaiah 60:6).

Parvaim. 2 Chr. 3:6⁶And he garnished the house with precious stones for beauty: and the gold was gold of Parvaim. (2 Chronicles 3:6).

Belongs to God. Joel 3:5⁵Because ye have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried into your temples my goodly pleasant things: (Joel 3:5) Hag. 2:8⁸The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the Lord of hosts. (Haggai 2:8).

DESCRIBED AS

Yellow. Psa. 68:13¹³Though ye have lien among the pots, yet shall ye be as the wings of a dove covered with silver, and her feathers with yellow gold. (Psalm 68:13).

Malleable. Ex. 39:3³And they did beat the gold into thin plates, and cut it into wires, to work it in the blue, and in the purple, and in the scarlet, and in the fine linen, with cunning work. (Exodus 39:3). 1 Kin. 10:16, 17

Fusible. Ex. 32:3, 4³And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. ⁴And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. (Exodus 32:3‑4). Prov. 17:3³The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the Lord trieth the hearts. (Proverbs 17:3).

Precious. Ezra 8:27²⁷Also twenty basons of gold, of a thousand drams; and two vessels of fine copper, precious as gold. (Ezra 8:27). Isa. 13:12¹²I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir. (Isaiah 13:12).

Valuable. Job 28:15, 16¹⁵It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof. ¹⁶It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire. (Job 28:15‑16).

Most valuable when pure and fine. Job 28:19¹⁹The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold. (Job 28:19). Psa. 19:10¹⁰More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. (Psalm 19:10). Psa. 21:3³For thou preventest him with the blessings of goodness: thou settest a crown of pure gold on his head. (Psalm 21:3). Prov. 3:14¹⁴For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. (Proverbs 3:14).

Refined and tried by fire. Zech. 13:9⁹And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God. (Zechariah 13:9). 1 Peter 1:7⁷That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: (1 Peter 1:7).

Working in, a trade. Neh. 3:8⁸Next unto him repaired Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, of the goldsmiths. Next unto him also repaired Hananiah the son of one of the apothecaries, and they fortified Jerusalem unto the broad wall. (Nehemiah 3:8). Isa. 40:19¹⁹The workman melteth a graven image, and the goldsmith spreadeth it over with gold, and casteth silver chains. (Isaiah 40:19).

An article of commerce. Ezek. 27:22²²The merchants of Sheba and Raamah, they were thy merchants: they occupied in thy fairs with chief of all spices, and with all precious stones, and gold. (Ezekiel 27:22).

The patriarchs were rich in. Gen. 13:2²And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold. (Genesis 13:2).

Imported by Solomon. 1 Kin. 9:11, 28. 1 Kin. 10:11.

Abundance of, in Solomon's reign. 2 Chr. 1:15¹⁵And the king made silver and gold at Jerusalem as plenteous as stones, and cedar trees made he as the sycomore trees that are in the vale for abundance. (2 Chronicles 1:15).

Offerings of, for tabernacle. Ex. 35:22²²And they came, both men and women, as many as were willing hearted, and brought bracelets, and earrings, and rings, and tablets, all jewels of gold: and every man that offered offered an offering of gold unto the Lord. (Exodus 35:22).

Offering of, for temple. 1 Chron. 22:14¹⁴Now, behold, in my trouble I have prepared for the house of the Lord an hundred thousand talents of gold, and a thousand thousand talents of silver; and of brass and iron without weight; for it is in abundance: timber also and stone have I prepared; and thou mayest add thereto. (1 Chronicles 22:14). 1 Chron. 29:4, 7⁴Even three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses withal: (1 Chronicles 29:4)
⁷And gave for the service of the house of God of gold five thousand talents and ten thousand drams, and of silver ten thousand talents, and of brass eighteen thousand talents, and one hundred thousand talents of iron. (1 Chronicles 29:7).

Used as money. Matt. 10:9⁹Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, (Matthew 10:9). Acts 3:6⁶Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. (Acts 3:6).

Priestly and royal garments adorned with. Ex. 28:4-6⁴And these are the garments which they shall make; a breastplate, and an ephod, and a robe, and a broidered coat, a mitre, and a girdle: and they shall make holy garments for Aaron thy brother, and his sons, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office. ⁵And they shall take gold, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen. ⁶And they shall make the ephod of gold, of blue, and of purple, of scarlet, and fine twined linen, with cunning work. (Exodus 28:4‑6). Psa. 45:9, 13⁹Kings' daughters were among thy honorable women: upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir. (Psalm 45:9)

Overlaying the tabernacle. Ex. 36:34, 38³⁴And he overlaid the boards with gold, and made their rings of gold to be places for the bars, and overlaid the bars with gold. (Exodus 36:34)
³⁸And the five pillars of it with their hooks: and he overlaid their chapiters and their fillets with gold: but their five sockets were of brass. (Exodus 36:38).

Overlaying the temple. 1 Kin. 6: 21, 22.

Overlaying Cherubims in temple. 2 Chr. 3:10¹⁰And in the most holy house he made two cherubims of image work, and overlaid them with gold. (2 Chronicles 3:10).

Overlaying the ark, &c. Ex. 25:11-13¹¹And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, within and without shalt thou overlay it, and shalt make upon it a crown of gold round about. ¹²And thou shalt cast four rings of gold for it, and put them in the four corners thereof; and two rings shall be in the one side of it, and two rings in the other side of it. ¹³And thou shalt make staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold. (Exodus 25:11‑13).

Overlaying floor of temple. 1 Kin. 6:30.

Overlaying throne of Solomon. 1 Kin. 10:18.

Mercy seat and Cherubims. Ex. 25:17, 18¹⁷And thou shalt make a mercy seat of pure gold: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof. ¹⁸And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat. (Exodus 25:17‑18).

Sacred candlesticks. Ex. 25:31³¹And thou shalt make a candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work shall the candlestick be made: his shaft, and his branches, his bowls, his knops, and his flowers, shall be of the same. (Exodus 25:31). 2 Chr. 4:7, 20⁷And he made ten candlesticks of gold according to their form, and set them in the temple, five on the right hand, and five on the left. (2 Chronicles 4:7)
²⁰Moreover the candlesticks with their lamps, that they should burn after the manner before the oracle, of pure gold; (2 Chronicles 4:20).

Sacred utensils. Ex. 25:29, 38²⁹And thou shalt make the dishes thereof, and spoons thereof, and covers thereof, and bowls thereof, to cover withal: of pure gold shalt thou make them. (Exodus 25:29)
³⁸And the tongs thereof, and the snuffdishes thereof, shall be of pure gold. (Exodus 25:38). 2 Chr. 4:19-22¹⁹And Solomon made all the vessels that were for the house of God, the golden altar also, and the tables whereon the showbread was set; ²⁰Moreover the candlesticks with their lamps, that they should burn after the manner before the oracle, of pure gold; ²¹And the flowers, and the lamps, and the tongs, made he of gold, and that perfect gold; ²²And the snuffers, and the basons, and the spoons, and the censers, of pure gold: and the entry of the house, the inner doors thereof for the most holy place, and the doors of the house of the temple, were of gold. (2 Chronicles 4:19‑22).

Crowns. 2 Sam. 12:30³⁰And he took their king's crown from off his head, the weight whereof was a talent of gold with the precious stones: and it was set on David's head. And he brought forth the spoil of the city in great abundance. (2 Samuel 12:30). Psa. 21:3³For thou preventest him with the blessings of goodness: thou settest a crown of pure gold on his head. (Psalm 21:3).

Scepters. Esther 4:11¹¹All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days. (Esther 4:11).

Chains. Gen. 41:42⁴²And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck; (Genesis 41:42). Dan. 5:29²⁹Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. (Daniel 5:29).

Rings. SoS. 5:14. James 2:2²For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; (James 2:2).

Earrings. Judg. 8:24, 26²⁴And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.) (Judges 8:24)
²⁶And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels' necks. (Judges 8:26).

Ornaments. Jer. 4:30³⁰And when thou art spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life. (Jeremiah 4:30).

Shields. 2 Sam. 8:7⁷And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem. (2 Samuel 8:7). 1 Kin. 10: 16, 17.

Vessels. 1 Kin. 10:21. Esther 1:7⁷And they gave them drink in vessels of gold, (the vessels being diverse one from another,) and royal wine in abundance, according to the state of the king. (Esther 1:7).

Idols. Ex. 20:23²³Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold. (Exodus 20:23). Psa. 115:4⁴Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. (Psalm 115:4). Dan. 5:4⁴They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone. (Daniel 5:4).

Couches. Esther 1:6⁶Where were white, green, and blue, hangings, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble: the beds were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of red, and blue, and white, and black, marble. (Esther 1:6).

Footstools. 2 Chr. 9:18¹⁸And there were six steps to the throne, with a footstool of gold, which were fastened to the throne, and stays on each side of the sitting place, and two lions standing by the stays: (2 Chronicles 9:18).

Estimated by weight. 1 Chron. 28:14¹⁴He gave of gold by weight for things of gold, for all instruments of all manner of service; silver also for all instruments of silver by weight, for all instruments of every kind of service: (1 Chronicles 28:14).

Given as presents. 1 Kin-. 15:19. Matt. 2:11¹¹And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. (Matthew 2:11).

Exacted as tribute. 1 Kin. 20:3, 5. 2 Kin. 23: 33, 35.

Taken in war, dedicated to God. Josh. 6:19¹⁹But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the Lord: they shall come into the treasury of the Lord. (Joshua 6:19). 2 Sam. 8:11¹¹Which also king David did dedicate unto the Lord, with the silver and gold that he had dedicated of all nations which he subdued; (2 Samuel 8:11). 1 Kin. 15:15.

Kings of Israel not to multiply. Deut. 17:17¹⁷Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold. (Deuteronomy 17:17).

Jews condemned for multiplying. Isa. 2:7⁷Their land also is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures; their land is also full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots: (Isaiah 2:7).

Vanity of heaping up. Ecc. 2:8, 11.

LIABLE TO

Grow dim. Lam. 4:1¹How is the gold become dim! how is the most fine gold changed! the stones of the sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street. (Lamentations 4:1).

Canker and rust. James 5:3³Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. (James 5:3).

ILLUSTRATIVE OF

Saints after affliction. Job 23:10¹⁰But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold. (Job 23:10).

Tried faith. 1 Peter 1:7⁷That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: (1 Peter 1:7).

The doctrines of grace. Rev. 3:18¹⁸I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. (Revelation 3:18).

True converts. 1 Cor. 3:12¹²Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; (1 Corinthians 3:12).

Babylonish empire. Dan. 2:38³⁸And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold. (Daniel 2:38).
