Humility.

Necessary to the service of God. Mic. 6:8⁸He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? (Micah 6:8).

Christ an example of. Matt. 11:29²⁹Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (Matthew 11:29). John 13:14, 15¹⁴If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. ¹⁵For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. (John 13:14‑15). Phi. 2:5-8.

A characteristic of saints. Psa. 34:2²My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. (Psalm 34:2).

THEY WHO HAVE,

Regarded by God. Psa. 138:6⁶Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off. (Psalm 138:6). Isa. 66:2²For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the Lord: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. (Isaiah 66:2).

Heard by God. Psa. 9:12¹²When he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them: he forgetteth not the cry of the humble. (Psalm 9:12). Psa. 10:17¹⁷Lord, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear: (Psalm 10:17).

Enjoyed the presence of God. Isa. 57:15¹⁵For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. (Isaiah 57:15).

Delivered by God. Job 22:29²⁹When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person. (Job 22:29).

Lifted up by God. James 4:10¹⁰Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. (James 4:10).

Exalted by God. Luke 14:11¹¹For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. (Luke 14:11). Luke 18:14¹⁴I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. (Luke 18:14).

Are greatest in Christ's kingdom. Matt. 18:4⁴Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 18:4). Matt. 20:26-28²⁶But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; ²⁷And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: ²⁸Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. (Matthew 20:26‑28).

Receive more grace. Prov. 3:34³⁴Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly. (Proverbs 3:34). James 4:6⁶But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. (James 4:6).

Upheld by honor. Prov. 18:12¹²Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honor is humility. (Proverbs 18:12). Prov. 29:23²³A man's pride shall bring him low: but honor shall uphold the humble in spirit. (Proverbs 29:23).

Is before honor. Prov. 15:33³³The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; and before honor is humility. (Proverbs 15:33).

Leads to riches, honor, and life. Prov. 22:4⁴By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honor, and life. (Proverbs 22:4).

SAINTS SHOULD

Put on. Col. 3:12¹²Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; (Colossians 3:12).

Be clothed with. 1 Peter 5:5⁵Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. (1 Peter 5:5). Walk with. Eph. 4:1, 2¹I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, ²With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; (Ephesians 4:1‑2).

Beware of false. Col. 2:18, 23¹⁸Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, (Colossians 2:18)
²³Which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honor to the satisfying of the flesh. (Colossians 2:23).

Afflictions intended to produce. Lev. 26:41⁴¹And that I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity: (Leviticus 26:41). Deut. 8:3³And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live. (Deuteronomy 8:3). Lam. 3:20²⁰My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me. (Lamentations 3:20).

Want of, condemned. 2 Chr. 33: 23. 2 Chr. 36:12¹²And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord his God, and humbled not himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from the mouth of the Lord. (2 Chronicles 36:12). Jer. 44:10¹⁰They are not humbled even unto this day, neither have they feared, nor walked in my law, nor in my statutes, that I set before you and before your fathers. (Jeremiah 44:10). Dan. 5:22²²And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this; (Daniel 5:22).

Temporal judgments averted by. 2 Chr. 7:14¹⁴If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14). 2 Chr. 12:6, 7⁶Whereupon the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves; and they said, The Lord is righteous. ⁷And when the Lord saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah, saying, They have humbled themselves; therefore I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance; and my wrath shall not be poured out upon Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak. (2 Chronicles 12:6‑7).

Excellency of. Prov. 16:19¹⁹Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud. (Proverbs 16:19).

Blessedness of. Matt. 5:3³Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:3).

Exemplified. Abraham, Gen. 18:27²⁷And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes: (Genesis 18:27). Jacob, Gen. 32:10¹⁰I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast showed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands. (Genesis 32:10). Moses, Ex. 3:11¹¹And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? (Exodus 3:11). Ex. 4:10¹⁰And Moses said unto the Lord, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. (Exodus 4:10). Joshua, Josh. 7:6⁶And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the Lord until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads. (Joshua 7:6). Gideon, Jud. 66:15. David, 1 Chron. 29:14¹⁴But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee. (1 Chronicles 29:14). Hezekiah, 2 Chr. 32:26²⁶Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the Lord came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah. (2 Chronicles 32:26). Manasseh, 2 Chr. 33:12¹²And when he was in affliction, he besought the Lord his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers, (2 Chronicles 33:12). Josiah, 2 Chr. 34:27²⁷Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the Lord. (2 Chronicles 34:27). Job, Job 40:4⁴Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth. (Job 40:4). Job 42:6⁶Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes. (Job 42:6). Isaiah, Isa. 6:5⁵Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. (Isaiah 6:5). Jeremiah, Jer. 1:6. John the Baptist, Matt. 3:14¹⁴But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? (Matthew 3:14). Centurion, Matt. 8:8⁸The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. (Matthew 8:8). Woman of Canaan, Matt. 15:27²⁷And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table. (Matthew 15:27). Elizabeth, Luke 1:43⁴³And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? (Luke 1:43). Peter, Luke 5:8⁸When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. (Luke 5:8), Paul, Acts 20:19¹⁹Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews: (Acts 20:19).
