Ministry on This Verse

+
They thought, in consequence, that John would not die. The Lord did not say so―a warning not to ascribe a meaning to His words, instead of receiving one; and at the same time showing our need of the Holy Spirit’s help; for the words literally might be so taken. (John 21 by J.N. Darby)
In his ministry John went on to the end, to the coming of Christ in judgment to the earth; and he has linked the judgment of the assembly, as the responsible witness on earth, with the judgment of the world, when God shall resume His connection with the earth in government (the testimony of the assembly being finished, and it having been caught up, according to its proper character, to be with the Lord in heaven). (John 21 by J.N. Darby)
John has passed away, but he remains ministering to us through the word. We also find in Revelation his ministry still going on, till the new heaven and the new earth are included. (Scripture Study: John 21)
Error easily insinuates itself into the first remove from what He says, as the Apostle instructs us here that the Lord did not affirm that that disciple was not to die, but “If I will that he abide till I come.” Yet those who let in this primitive mistake were not enemies, were not grievous wolves, or men speaking perverse things to draw away the disciples after them. It was “among the brethren.” (John 21 by W. Kelly)

J. N. Darby Translation

+
23
This word therefore went out among the brethren, That disciple does not die. And Jesus did not say to him, He does not die; but, If I will that he abide until I come, what is that to thee?

W. Kelly Translation

+
23
This saying therefore went forth among the brethren that that disciple doth not die; yet Jesus said not to him, that he doth not die; but, If I will that he abide till I come, what [is it] to theea?
