More Water to Drink

Narrator: Chris Genthree
Do you remember that long, long camping trip the children of Israel took that God tells us about in the Bible? It included many, many families and even brand new babies that were born along the way. It also included all their cattle.
Since they had no stores or farms, food and drink for this huge crowd was a big responsibility for somebody, and that Somebody was God Himself. You may be sure He provided for all their needs. If some died along the way, it was not because of hunger or thirst or sunstroke. No, it was because they didn’t believe what God had said!
Here is the story of one day in their travels to another campsite. God told Moses, their leader, “Gather the people together, and I will give them water” (Numbers 21:1616And from thence they went to Beer: that is the well whereof the Lord spake unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water. (Numbers 21:16)).
You might wonder if Moses thought, There are millions of us! What can I do? I don’t see any water! I can’t call them together for nothing! No, Moses did not answer God like that. If you would talk like that, you don’t know who God is. Listen! God created you, the whole world, the sun, moon and stars and everything else, and He put them in place with His fingers. And He so loved the world and all the people in it that He gave His only begotten Son. Our God has all power!
Moses had a very hard job to do, but when God gives a command, it is never impossible. So Moses gathered the people together. Now what? Did God keep His promise? What do you think?
The princes and nobles came forward as Moses commanded and dug a well. And this is how they did it. They had no power shovels or spades, so they used their staffs (walking sticks). And then up sprang the water that the Lord miraculously provided! It must have been a very happy surprise for the thirsty people, for they all burst into singing! “Spring up, O well” (Numbers 21:1717Then Israel sang this song, Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it: (Numbers 21:17)), the people sang with joy. They sang about Moses, their lawgiver, and the princes and nobles who had dug this springing well for them.
Did you notice there is one thing missing in their song? They sang about Moses and the well diggers, but not a word about the God who planned it all and gave them the water. It was a glad song, and I’m sure the Lord was glad to hear it, just like He loves to hear you sing about the good things He gives you. But do you ever sing about the Giver, the Lord Jesus Himself?
Here is one song that maybe some of you know, thanking the Lord Jesus for the best gift in the world:
Thank You, Lord, for saving my soul;
Thank You, Lord, for making me whole;
Thank You, Lord, for giving to me,
Thy great salvation so full and free.
He is the Giver of all good, and He has gifts that will do more than give you a refreshing drink of water for today. He has water that cleans more than the dust and sweat of today. He has the water of life for you, and it’s forever. “Let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely” (Revelation 22:1717And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. (Revelation 22:17)).
“Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:1414But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. (John 4:14)). Have you taken a drink of that water of life that He has for you that will give you everlasting life in His home in heaven?
Will you accept this best gift He is holding out to you?
