71*. Oh, My Savior Crucified

7s.
by R.C. Chapman
1
Oh, my Savior crucified,

Near Thy cross would I abide,

Gazing with adoring eye

On Thy dying agony.
2
Jesus bruised and put to shame,

Tells the glories of God’s name;

Holy judgment there I found,

Grace did there o’er sin abound.
“I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.” (Isaiah 50:6)
“Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.” (Romans 5:20)
3
God is love I surely know,

In the Savior’s depth of woe;

In the Sinless, in God’s sight,

Sin is justly brought to light.
“He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” (1 John 4:8)
“I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.” (Psalm 69:2)
“Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth.” (1 Peter 2:22)
4
In His spotless soul’s distress,

I have learnt my guiltiness;

Oh, how vile my low estate,

Since my ransom was so great.
“But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” (1 Peter 1:19)
“Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.” (Matthew 26:38-39)
“Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.” (1 Timothy 2:6)
5
Rent the veil that closed the way

To my home of heavenly day,

In the flesh of Christ the Lord,

Ever be His name adored.
“And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent.” (Matthew 27:51)
“By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh.” (Hebrews 10:20)
6
Yet in sight of Calvary,

Contrite should my spirit be,

Rest and holiness there find,

Fashioned like my Savior’s mind.
“Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” (Matthew 11:28-29)
“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 2:5)
