PRO 4:20-24²⁰My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. ²¹Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. ²²For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. ²³Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. ²⁴Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee. (Proverbs 4:20‑24)

Notice God’s order here. It is the same all through the Bible. First, read and receive God’s instructions. Second, keep His Word in your heart by obeying it - doing what it says to you. Then third, avoid evil, put it away, flee from youthful lusts. First, God’s goodness and love to us must be known and enjoyed and acted upon. Then we have divine power to refuse evil. “The goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance.”
