Foretold by the prophets. Psa. 16:10¹⁰For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. (Psalm 16:10), with Acts 13:34, 35³⁴And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David. ³⁵Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. (Acts 13:34‑35). Isa. 26:19¹⁹Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead. (Isaiah 26:19).

Foretold by Himself. Matt. 20:19¹⁹And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again. (Matthew 20:19). Mar. 9:9. Mar. 14:28. John. 2:19-22.

WAS NECESSARY TO

The fulfillment of Scripture. Luke 24:45, 46⁴⁵Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, ⁴⁶And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: (Luke 24:45‑46).

Forgiveness of sins. 1 Cor. 15:17¹⁷And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. (1 Corinthians 15:17).

Justification. Rom. 4:25²⁵Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. (Romans 4:25). Rom. 8:34³⁴Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. (Romans 8:34).

Hope. 1 Cor. 15:19¹⁹If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. (1 Corinthians 15:19).

The efficacy of preaching. 1 Cor. 15:14¹⁴And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. (1 Corinthians 15:14).

The efficacy of faith. 1 Cor. 15:14,17¹⁴And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. (1 Corinthians 15:14)
¹⁷And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. (1 Corinthians 15:17).

A proof of His being the Son of God. Psa. 2:7⁷I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. (Psalm 2:7), with Acts 13:33³³God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. (Acts 13:33). Rom. 1:4⁴And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: (Romans 1:4).

EFFECTED BY

The power of God. Acts 2:24²⁴Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. (Acts 2:24). Acts 3:15¹⁵And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. (Acts 3:15). Rom. 8:11¹¹But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. (Romans 8:11). Eph. 1:20²⁰Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, (Ephesians 1:20). Col. 2:12¹²Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. (Colossians 2:12).

His own power. John 2:19¹⁹Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. (John 2:19). John 10:18¹⁸No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. (John 10:18).

The power of the Holy Ghost. 1 Peter 3:18¹⁸For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: (1 Peter 3:18).

On the first day of the week. Mar. 16:9.

On the third day after His death. Luke 24:46⁴⁶And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: (Luke 24:46). Acts 10:40⁴⁰Him God raised up the third day, and showed him openly; (Acts 10:40). 1 Cor. 15:4⁴And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: (1 Corinthians 15:4).

THE APOSTLES

At first did not understand the predictions. Mar. 9:10. John 20:9⁹For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. (John 20:9).

Very slow to believe. Mar. 16:13. Luke 24:9, 11, 37, 38⁹And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest. (Luke 24:9)
¹¹And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not. (Luke 24:11)
³⁷But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. ³⁸And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? (Luke 24:37‑38).

HE APPEARED AFTER, TO

Mary Magdalene. Mar. 16:9. John. 20:18.

The women. Matt. 28:9⁹And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. (Matthew 28:9).

Simon Peter. Luke 24:34³⁴Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. (Luke 24:34).

Two disciples. Luke 24:13-31¹³And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. ¹⁴And they talked together of all these things which had happened. ¹⁵And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. ¹⁶But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. ¹⁷And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? ¹⁸And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? ¹⁹And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: ²⁰And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. ²¹But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. ²²Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre; ²³And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. ²⁴And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not. ²⁵Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: ²⁶Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? ²⁷And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. ²⁸And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. ²⁹But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. ³⁰And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. ³¹And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. (Luke 24:13‑31).

Apostles, except Thomas. John 20:19, 24¹⁹Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. (John 20:19)
²⁴But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. (John 20:24).

Apostles, Thomas being present. John 20:26²⁶And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. (John 20:26).

Apostles at the sea of Tiberias. John 21:1¹After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise showed he himself. (John 21:1).

Apostles in Galilee. Matt. 28:16, 17¹⁶Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. ¹⁷And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. (Matthew 28:16‑17).

Above five hundred brethren,. Cor. 15:6. James. 1 Cor. 15:7⁷After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. (1 Corinthians 15:7).

All the Apostles. Luke 24:51⁵¹And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. (Luke 24:51). Acts 1:9⁹And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. (Acts 1:9). 1 Cor. 15:7⁷After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. (1 Corinthians 15:7). Paul. 1 Cor. 15:8⁸And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. (1 Corinthians 15:8).

Fraud impossible in. Matt. 27:63-66⁶³Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. ⁶⁴Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first. ⁶⁵Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can. ⁶⁶So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch. (Matthew 27:63‑66).

He gave many infallible proofs of. Luke 24:35, 39, 43³⁵And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. (Luke 24:35)
³⁹Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. (Luke 24:39)
⁴³And he took it, and did eat before them. (Luke 24:43). John 20:20, 27²⁰And when he had so said, he showed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. (John 20:20)
²⁷Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. (John 20:27). Acts 1:3³To whom also he showed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: (Acts 1:3).

WAS ATTESTED BY

Angels. Matt. 28:5-7⁵And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. ⁶He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. ⁷And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. (Matthew 28:5‑7). Luke 24:4-7, 23⁴And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: ⁵And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? ⁶He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, ⁷Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. (Luke 24:4‑7)
²³And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. (Luke 24:23).

Apostles. Acts 1:22²²Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection. (Acts 1:22). Acts 2:32³²This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. (Acts 2:32), Acts 3:15¹⁵And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. (Acts 3:15). Acts 4:33³³And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. (Acts 4:33).

His enemies. Matt. 28:11-15¹¹Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and showed unto the chief priests all the things that were done. ¹²And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, ¹³Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. ¹⁴And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. ¹⁵So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day. (Matthew 28:11‑15).

Asserted and preached by the Apostles. Acts 25:19¹⁹But had certain questions against him of their own superstition, and of one Jesus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive. (Acts 25:19). Acts 26:23²³That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should show light unto the people, and to the Gentiles. (Acts 26:23).

SAINTS

Begotten to a lively hope by. 1 Peter 1:3, 21³Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, (1 Peter 1:3)
²¹Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God. (1 Peter 1:21).

Desire to know the power of. Phi. 3:10.

Should keep, in remembrance. 2 Tim. 2:8⁸Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: (2 Timothy 2:8).

Shall rise in the likeness of. Rom. 6:5⁵For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: (Romans 6:5). 1 Cor. 15:49⁴⁹And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly. (1 Corinthians 15:49), with Phi. 3:21.

Is an emblem of the new birth. Rom. 6:4⁴Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:4). Col. 2:12¹²Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. (Colossians 2:12).

The first-fruits of our resurrection. Acts 26:23²³That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should show light unto the people, and to the Gentiles. (Acts 26:23). 1 Cor. 15:20, 23²⁰But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. (1 Corinthians 15:20)
²³But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming. (1 Corinthians 15:23).

The truth of the gospel involved in. 1 Cor. 15:14, 15¹⁴And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. ¹⁵Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. (1 Corinthians 15:14‑15).

Followed by His exaltation. Acts 4:10, 11¹⁰Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. ¹¹This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. (Acts 4:10‑11). Rom. 8:34³⁴Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. (Romans 8:34). Eph. 1:20²⁰Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, (Ephesians 1:20). Phi. 2:9, 10. Rev. 1:18¹⁸I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. (Revelation 1:18).

An assurance of the judgment. Acts 17:31³¹Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. (Acts 17:31).

Typified. Isaac, Gen. 22:13¹³And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. (Genesis 22:13), with Heb. 11:19¹⁹Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure. (Hebrews 11:19). Jonah, Jonah 2:10¹⁰And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land. (Jonah 2:10), with Matt. 12:40⁴⁰For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (Matthew 12:40).
