Sadducees, săd′-dū-c̣eeṡ; A religious party of the Jews, in opposition to the Pharisees. The name is derived either from Zadok (Gk. often Saddouk), a Rabbi who lived about 300 B.C., or from Sadoc, “just,” “righteous,” as a retort against the arrogant title of “pious” adopted by the Pharisees. They were very conservative in theology, and refused to admit any doctrine which could not be traced to Moses. (Hence their address to our Lord: “Master, Moses said  ... ”) Thus they retained the vague ideas of a future life held by the earlier Hebrews, denying the doctrine of resurrection; and in consequence their creed was rationalistic in tone; they held that there was “neither angel nor spirit.” In our Lord’s time the high-priestly aristocracy was largely Sadducæan (Acts 4:1717But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. (Acts 4:17)). Their controversies with Christ, Matt. 16:1; 22:231The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would show them a sign from heaven. (Matthew 16:1)

(2 Kings 17:24‑41)). Having been refused an alliance with the Jews after the Return from Exile, they built a temple on Mt. Gerizim. They accepted the Pentateuch and the books of Joshua and Judges. The Samaritans now number about 150. For the hostility between Jews and Samaritans, comp. John 4:99Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. (John 4:9). St. Luke lays special stress on our Lord’s tolerance to these people (parable of the good Samaritan; incident of the grateful Samaritan leper).

Sanhedrin, The; (Gk. σννέδριον, lit., “a sitting together”; in A.V. and R.V. “council”), was the great “Council” of the Jewish Church and people, which, after Alexander’s conquest, if not before, held chief authority “in all causes and over all persons, ecclesiastical and civil.” It was suggested by the old institution of 72 elders (six from each tribe), appointed by MOSES (Ex. 18:1414And when Moses' father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even? (Exodus 18:14); Num. 11:1616And the Lord said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee. (Numbers 11:16)). It consisted of an equal number (24) of priests, scribes and elders, all of whom were required to be married, above 30 years of age, well instructed in the Law, and of good report among the people. This constituted the Supreme Court of Judicature and Administrative Council, taking cognizance of false doctrine and teaching, as well as of breaches of the Mosaic Law, and regulating both civil and ecclesiastical observances peculiar to the Jewish nation.

Stoics, stō′-ĭcs; philosophers whose founder taught in a famous porch or Stoa at Athens. They taught that the universe is permeated by a principle of reason: that this reason Was man’s highest possession and made him (a) essentially independent of pleasure and pain, (b) a cosmopolitan being, i.e., member of a worldwide commonwealth. It was from a Stoic poet (Aratus or Cleanthes) that St. Paul quoted the words, “For we also are his offspring” (Acts 17:2828For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. (Acts 17:28)).

(2) (Isa. 38:1414Like a crane or a swallow, so did I chatter: I did mourn as a dove: mine eyes fail with looking upward: O Lord, I am oppressed; undertake for me. (Isaiah 38:14)). Heb. Agûr; Gk. χελιδών. R.V. “crane.” “Swallow” (A.V.) is thought to be a mistranslation for “crane.”

Synagogue, The; (Gk. συναγωγή, “a gathering together”; Heb. Keneseth), was a term applied both to the congregation in a provincial town, and to the room in which it met during the week for mutual instruction, disputation, and administration of justice, and on the sabbath for prayer and praise, not sacrifice. The institution of the synagogue dates probably from the Captivity in Babylon. There are said to have been 480 synagogues in Jerusalem, but this is probably an exaggeration.
The principal officers of the Synagogue were:
(1) The Batlanim (men of leisure). These were the “Rulers of the Synagogue” also called the “shepherds” and the “elders” they had special seats of honor assigned them during divine worship (Acts 13:1515And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on. (Acts 13:15); Matt. 23:66And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, (Matthew 23:6)). They also formed the local Sanhedrin or tribunal.
(2) The Shellach (Delegate). He was one of the elders, delegated by the Chief Shepherd (Parnas) to recite the most sacred portions of the liturgy, and be the mouthpiece of the congregation.
(3) The Chazzan (literally Inspector), the permanent minister or attendant (Luke 4:2020And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. (Luke 4:20)), whose duties were partly ecclesiastical, partly civil. He frequently acted as schoolmaster.
(4) The Methurgeman (Interpreter). As the synagogue came principally into use in later times, when Hebrew was not well-known and Greek and Aramaic were more generally used in common life, the Law was expounded to the congregation by an interpreter. This word Methurgeman, or Turgeman, has been corrupted into the modern Dragoman.
Syracuse, sȳr′-ă-cūse; the chief city of Syria. Acts 28:1212And landing at Syracuse, we tarried there three days. (Acts 28:12).
Syria, sy̆r′-ĭ-ă; was a country along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean, and extending inland to Mesopotamia. In early times its capital was Damascus. After the Roman conquest the capital was Antioch. Judg. 10:66And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim, and Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Zidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines, and forsook the Lord, and served not him. (Judges 10:6).
Syrians; Aramæans, sy̆r′-ĭ-ănṡ; Heb. Arâm; Gk. σύροι; Lat. Syri. Aram is in O.T. the name for a large region extending from Mesopotamia, of which it included a part, to Syria and Arabia Petræa. The Syrians are one branch of the Semites, and their language, Aramaic, a dialect of the Semitic language, which became the language of western Mayra, and the common language of Palestine. Gen. 25:2020And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan-aram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.
