A part of defensive armor. Psa. 115:9⁹O Israel, trust thou in the Lord: he is their help and their shield. (Psalm 115:9), with Psa. 140:7⁷O God the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle. (Psalm 140:7).

FREQUENTLY MADE OF, OR COVERED WITH

Gold. 2 Sam. 8:7⁷And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem. (2 Samuel 8:7). 1 Kin. 10:17.

Brass. 1 Kin. 14:27.

Said to belong to God. Psa. 47:9⁹The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham: for the shields of the earth belong unto God: he is greatly exalted. (Psalm 47:9).

KINDS OF;

The buckler or target. 2 Chr. 9:15¹⁵And king Solomon made two hundred targets of beaten gold: six hundred shekels of beaten gold went to one target. (2 Chronicles 9:15), with 1 Chron. 5:18¹⁸The sons of Reuben, and the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh, of valiant men, men able to bear buckler and sword, and to shoot with bow, and skilful in war, were four and forty thousand seven hundred and threescore, that went out to the war. (1 Chronicles 5:18). Ezek. 26:8⁸He shall slay with the sword thy daughters in the field: and he shall make a fort against thee, and cast a mount against thee, and lift up the buckler against thee. (Ezekiel 26:8).

The small shield. 2 Cor. 9:16.

Often borne by an armor-bearer. 1 Sam. 17:7⁷And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him. (1 Samuel 17:7).

BEFORE WAR

Gathered together. Jer. 51:11¹¹Make bright the arrows; gather the shields: the Lord hath raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes: for his device is against Babylon, to destroy it; because it is the vengeance of the Lord, the vengeance of his temple. (Jeremiah 51:11). Uncovered. Isa. 22:6⁶And Elam bare the quiver with chariots of men and horsemen, and Kir uncovered the shield. (Isaiah 22:6).

Repaired. Jer. 46:3³Order ye the buckler and shield, and draw near to battle. (Jeremiah 46:3).

Anointed. 2 Sam. 1:21²¹Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil. (2 Samuel 1:21), with Isa. 21:5⁵Prepare the table, watch in the watchtower, eat, drink: arise, ye princes, and anoint the shield. (Isaiah 21:5).

Often made red. Neh. 2:3³And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire? (Nehemiah 2:3).

Provided by the kings of Israel in great abundance. 2 Chr. 11:12¹²And in every several city he put shields and spears, and made them exceeding strong, having Judah and Benjamin on his side. (2 Chronicles 11:12). 2 Chr. 26:14¹⁴And Uzziah prepared for them throughout all the host shields, and spears, and helmets, and habergeons, and bows, and slings to cast stones. (2 Chronicles 26:14). 2 Chr. 32:5⁵Also he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and repaired Millo in the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance. (2 Chronicles 32:5).

A disgrace to lose, or throw away. 2 Sam. 1:21²¹Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil. (2 Samuel 1:21).

Of the vanquished, often burned. Ezek. 39:9⁹And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years: (Ezekiel 39:9).

In times of peace were hung up in towers of armories. Ezek. 27:10¹⁰They of Persia and of Lud and of Phut were in thine army, thy men of war: they hanged the shield and helmet in thee; they set forth thy comeliness. (Ezekiel 27:10), with SoS. 4:4.

Were scarce in Israel in the days of Deborah and Barak. Judg. 5:8⁸They chose new gods; then was war in the gates: was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel? (Judges 5:8).

Many of the Israelites used, with expertness. 1 Chron. 12:8, 24, 34⁸And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto David into the hold to the wilderness men of might, and men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield and buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as the roes upon the mountains; (1 Chronicles 12:8)
²⁴The children of Judah that bare shield and spear were six thousand and eight hundred, ready armed to the war. (1 Chronicles 12:24)
³⁴And of Naphtali a thousand captains, and with them with shield and spear thirty and seven thousand. (1 Chronicles 12:34). 2 Chr. 14:8⁸And Asa had an army of men that bare targets and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand: all these were mighty men of valor. (2 Chronicles 14:8). 2 Chr. 25:5⁵Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield. (2 Chronicles 25:5).

ILLUSTRATIVE OF

Protection of God. Gen. 15:1¹After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. (Genesis 15:1). Psa. 33:20²⁰Our soul waiteth for the Lord: he is our help and our shield. (Psalm 33:20).

Favor of God. Psa. 5:12¹²For thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous; with favor wilt thou compass him as with a shield. (Psalm 5:12).

Truth of God. Psa. 91:4⁴He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. (Psalm 91:4).

Salvation of God. 2 Sam. 22:36³⁶Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy gentleness hath made me great. (2 Samuel 22:36). Psa. 18:35³⁵Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great. (Psalm 18:35).

Faith. Eph. 6:16¹⁶Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. (Ephesians 6:16).
