Early use of. Gen. 14:23²³That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich: (Genesis 14:23).

Called sandals. Mar. 6:9. Acts 12:8⁸And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. (Acts 12:8).

Soles of, sometimes plated with brass or iron. Deut. 33:25²⁵Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be. (Deuteronomy 33:25).

Bound round the feet with latchets or strings. John 1:27²⁷He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose. (John 1:27). Acts 12:8⁸And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. (Acts 12:8).

OF LADIES OF DISTINCTION

Often made of badgers' skins. Ezek. 16:10¹⁰I clothed thee also with broidered work, and shod thee with badgers' skin, and I girded thee about with fine linen, and I covered thee with silk. (Ezekiel 16:10).

Often highly ornamental. SoS. 7:1.

Probably often adorned with tinkling ornaments. Isa. 3:18¹⁸In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon, (Isaiah 3:18).

Loosing of, for another a degrading office. Mar. 1:7. John 1:27²⁷He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose. (John 1:27).

Bearing, for another a degrading office, only performed by slaves. Matt. 3:11¹¹I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: (Matthew 3:11).

THE JEWS

Put on, before beginning a journey. Ex. 12:11¹¹And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the Lord's passover. (Exodus 12:11).

Never wore, in mourning. 2 Sam. 15:30³⁰And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up. (2 Samuel 15:30). Isa. 20:2, 3²At the same time spake the Lord by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, Go and loose the sackcloth from off thy loins, and put off thy shoe from thy foot. And he did so, walking naked and barefoot. ³And the Lord said, Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked and barefoot three years for a sign and wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia; (Isaiah 20:2‑3). Ezek. 24:17¹⁷Forbear to cry, make no mourning for the dead, bind the tire of thine head upon thee, and put on thy shoes upon thy feet, and cover not thy lips, and eat not the bread of men. (Ezekiel 24:17),

Put off, when they entered sacred places. Ex. 3:5⁵And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. (Exodus 3:5). Josh. 5:15¹⁵And the captain of the Lord's host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so. (Joshua 5:15).

Worn out by a long journey. Jos. 9:5, 13⁵And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy. (Joshua 9:5)
¹³And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey. (Joshua 9:13).

Of Israel preserved for forty years, while journeying in the wilderness. Deut. 29:5⁵And I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot. (Deuteronomy 29:5).

Often given as bribes. Amos 2:6⁶Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes; (Amos 2:6). Amos 8:6⁶That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; yea, and sell the refuse of the wheat? (Amos 8:6).

CUSTOMS CONNECTED WITH;

A man who refused to marry a deceased brother's wife disgraced by her pulling off his shoes. Deut. 25:9, 10⁹Then shall his brother's wife come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother's house. ¹⁰And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him that hath his shoe loosed. (Deuteronomy 25:9‑10).

The right of redemption resigned by a man's giving one of his shoes to the next of kin. Ruth 4:7, 8⁷Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbor: and this was a testimony in Israel. ⁸Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. So he drew off his shoe. (Ruth 4:7‑8).

The Apostles prohibited from taking for their journey more, than the pair they had on. Matt. 10:10¹⁰Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat. (Matthew 10:10). Mark 6:9⁹But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats. (Mark 6:9). Luke 10:4⁴Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. (Luke 10:4).

Of the beauty conferred on saints. SoS. 7:1, with Luke 15:22²²But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: (Luke 15:22).

(Taken off,) of an ignominious and servile condition. Isa. 47:2²Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers. (Isaiah 47:2). Jer. 2:25²⁵Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go. (Jeremiah 2:25).
