As we look at our picture today, we see what ought to touch the heart of every one with sadness.
A poor stag has been driven out of its hiding place, and men and dogs are following hard after it the men shouting, the dogs barking, while the poor creature, wild with fright, is bounding over bush and brake seeking to elude his pursuers.
This scene is in England in some parts of which there is much hunting of the stag in the way of sport. But what a cruel sport it is! And how could a child of God ever take part in such a thing!
God tells us in His word, “Thou shalt not see thy brother’s ass or his ox fall down by the way, and hide thyself from them; thou shalt surely help him to lift them up again.” Deut. 22:44Thou shalt not see thy brother's ass or his ox fall down by the way, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt surely help him to lift them up again. (Deuteronomy 22:4). And “If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him.” Ex. 23:55If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him. (Exodus 23:5).
“He giveth to the beast his food, and to the young ravens which cry.” Ps. 147:9. “Behold the fowls of the air; . . . your heavenly Father feedeth them.” Matt. 6:2626Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? (Matthew 6:26). These Scriptures show that God cares for the beasts of burden; and He provides food for the wild beasts and the fowls. Surely it must displease Him much to see His creatures wantonly treated or abused in any way. You cannot, dear children, be too careful or too kind to any of the creatures with which you may have to do.
