Besides being a vessel from which we drink, a cup has other meanings in the Bible. Sometimes a cup can contain sorrow or joy. In Egypt it was used as a means of divination (Genesis 44:55Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing. (Genesis 44:5)). In the garden of Gethsemane the Lord Jesus prayed, saying, “Father, if Thou be willing, remove this cup from Me.” What a bitter cup that was! Then there is “the cup of blessing” for which we give thanks. But there is also the cup of wrath for all such who have rejected “the cup of salvation.”
What a variety of cups there are! Are we not careful as to what we drink out of a cup? So we should remember that God has either blessedness for those who love Him or judgment for those who despise Him. Which cup will you drink out of? Jeremiah was told to take a cup of fury and cause all nations to drink it. Then the Lord said, “And they shall drink.” Jeremiah took the cup and made all nations to drink. Read Jeremiah 25.
