Skins first supplied the place of cloth. Art of weaving cloth early known (Ex. 35:25²⁵And all the women that were wise hearted did spin with their hands, and brought that which they had spun, both of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine linen. (Exodus 35:25). Judg. 5:30³⁰Have they not sped? have they not divided the prey; to every man a damsel or two; to Sisera a prey of divers colors, a prey of divers colors of needlework, of divers colors of needlework on both sides, meet for the necks of them that take the spoil? (Judges 5:30)).

The two Hebrew words translated “cloth,” beged and simlah, are also translated “garments,” and do not explain of what it was composed nor how wrought.
