Afflicted, Duty Toward the.

To pray for them. Acts 12:5⁵Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. (Acts 12:5). Phi. 1:16, 19. Jas. 5:14-16¹⁴Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: ¹⁵And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. ¹⁶Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. (James 5:14‑16).

To sympathize with them. Rom. 12: 15. Gal. 6:2²Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2).

To pity them. Job 6:14¹⁴To him that is afflicted pity should be showed from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the Almighty. (Job 6:14).

To bear them in mind. Heb. 13:3³Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body. (Hebrews 13:3).

To visit them. Jas. 1:27²⁷Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. (James 1:27).

To comfort them. Job 16:5⁵But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should asswage your grief. (Job 16:5). Job 29:25²⁵I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners. (Job 29:25). 2 Cor. 1:4⁴Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. (2 Corinthians 1:4). 1 Thess. 4:18¹⁸Wherefore comfort one another with these words. (1 Thessalonians 4:18).

To relieve them. Job. 31:19, 20. Isa. 58:10¹⁰And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday: (Isaiah 58:10). Phi. 4:14. 1 Tim. 5:10¹⁰Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work. (1 Timothy 5:10).

To protect them. Psa. 82:3³Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. (Psalm 82:3). Pro. 22:22²²Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate: (Proverbs 22:22). Pro. 31:5⁵Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted. (Proverbs 31:5).
