Affliction, Consolation Under.

God is the Author and Giver of. Psa. 23:4⁴Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4). Rom. 15:5⁵Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: (Romans 15:5). 2 Cor. 1:3³Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; (2 Corinthians 1:3). 2 Cor. 7:6⁶Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus; (2 Corinthians 7:6). Col. 1:11¹¹Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; (Colossians 1:11). 2 Thess. 2:16, 17¹⁶Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, ¹⁷Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work. (2 Thessalonians 2:16‑17).

Christ is the Author and Giver of. Isa. 61:2²To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; (Isaiah 61:2). John. 14:18. 2 Cor. 1:5⁵For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. (2 Corinthians 1:5).

The Holy Ghost is the Author and Giver of. John. 14:16, 17. John. 15: 26. John. 16:7. Acts 9:31³¹Then had the churches rest throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied. (Acts 9:31).

Promised. Isa. 51:3, 12³For the Lord shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody. (Isaiah 51:3)
¹²I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass; (Isaiah 51:12). Isa. 66:13¹³As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem. (Isaiah 66:13). Eze. 14:22, 23²²Yet, behold, therein shall be left a remnant that shall be brought forth, both sons and daughters: behold, they shall come forth unto you, and ye shall see their way and their doings: and ye shall be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, even concerning all that I have brought upon it. ²³And they shall comfort you, when ye see their ways and their doings: and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, saith the Lord God. (Ezekiel 14:22‑23). Hos. 2:14¹⁴Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her. (Hosea 2:14). Zec. 1:17¹⁷Cry yet, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; My cities through prosperity shall yet be spread abroad; and the Lord shall yet comfort Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem. (Zechariah 1:17).

Through the Holy Scriptures. Psa. 119:50, 76⁵⁰This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me. (Psalm 119:50)
⁷⁶Let, I pray thee, thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant. (Psalm 119:76). Rom. 15:4⁴For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. (Romans 15:4).

By ministers of the gospel. Isa. 40:1, 2¹Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. ²Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her sins. (Isaiah 40:1‑2); 1 Cor. 14:3³But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. (1 Corinthians 14:3). 2 Cor. 1:4, 6⁴Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. (2 Corinthians 1:4)
⁶And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. (2 Corinthians 1:6).

Is abundant. Psa. 71:21²¹Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side. (Psalm 71:21). Isa. 66:11¹¹That ye may suck, and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations; that ye may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory. (Isaiah 66:11).

Is strong. Heb. 6:18¹⁸That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: (Hebrews 6:18).

Is everlasting. 2 The. 2:16.

Is a cause of praise. Isa. 12:1¹And in that day thou shalt say, O Lord, I will praise thee: though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me. (Isaiah 12:1). Isa. 49:13¹³Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the Lord hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted. (Isaiah 49:13).

Pray for. Psa. 119:82⁸²Mine eyes fail for thy word, saying, When wilt thou comfort me? (Psalm 119:82).

Saints should administer to each other 1 The. 4:18 1 The. 5:11, 14.

Is sought in vain from the world Psa. 69:20²⁰Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none. (Psalm 69:20). Ecc. 4:1. Lam. 1:2²She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks: among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her: all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they are become her enemies. (Lamentations 1:2).

To those who mourn for sin. Psa. 51:17¹⁷The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. (Psalm 51:17). Isa. 1:18¹⁸Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. (Isaiah 1:18). Isa. 40:1, 2¹Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. ²Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her sins. (Isaiah 40:1‑2). Isa. 61:1¹The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; (Isaiah 61:1). Mic. 7:18, 19¹⁸Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. ¹⁹He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. (Micah 7:18‑19). Luke 4:18¹⁸The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, (Luke 4:18)

To the troubled in mind. Psa. 42:5⁵Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. (Psalm 42:5). Psa. 94:19¹⁹In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul. (Psalm 94:19). John. 14:1, 27. John. 16: 20, 22.

To those deserted by friends. Psa. 27:10¹⁰When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up. (Psalm 27:10). Psa. 41:9-12⁹Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me. ¹⁰But thou, O Lord, be merciful unto me, and raise me up, that I may requite them. ¹¹By this I know that thou favorest me, because mine enemy doth not triumph over me. ¹²And as for me, thou upholdest me in mine integrity, and settest me before thy face for ever. (Psalm 41:9‑12). John. 14:18. John. 15:18, 19.

To the persecuted. Deu. 33:27.

To the poor. Psa. 10:14¹⁴Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless. (Psalm 10:14). Psa. 34:6, 9, 10⁶This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. (Psalm 34:6)
⁹O fear the Lord, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him. ¹⁰The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing. (Psalm 34:9‑10).

To the sick. Psa. 41:3³The Lord will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness. (Psalm 41:3).

To the tempted. Rom. 16:20²⁰And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. (Romans 16:20). 1 Cor. 10:13¹³There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (1 Corinthians 10:13). 2 Cor. 12:9⁹And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. (2 Corinthians 12:9). Jas. 1:12¹²Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. (James 1:12). Jas. 4:7⁷Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (James 4:7). 2 Pet. 2:9⁹The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished: (2 Peter 2:9). Rev. 2:10¹⁰Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. (Revelation 2:10).

In prospect of death. Job. 19:25, 26. Psa. 23:4⁴Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4). John. 14:2. 2 Cor. 5:1¹For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. (2 Corinthians 5:1). 1 The. 4:14. Heb. 4:9⁹There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. (Hebrews 4:9). Rev. 7:14¹⁴And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. (Revelation 7:14)—17. Rev. 14:13¹³And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them. (Revelation 14:13).

Under the infirmities of age. Psa. 71:9, 18⁹Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth. (Psalm 71:9)
¹⁸Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have showed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come. (Psalm 71:18).
