Affliction, Prayer Under.

Exhortation to Jas. 5:13¹³Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. (James 5:13).

That God would consider our trouble. 2 Kin. 19:16. Neh. 9:32³²Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day. (Nehemiah 9:32). Psa. 9:13¹³Have mercy upon me, O Lord; consider my trouble which I suffer of them that hate me, thou that liftest me up from the gates of death: (Psalm 9:13). Lam. 5.1.

For the presence and support of God. Psa. 10:1¹Why standest thou afar off, O Lord? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble? (Psalm 10:1). Psa. 102:2²Hide not thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble; incline thine ear unto me: in the day when I call answer me speedily. (Psalm 102:2).

That the Holy Spirit may not be withdrawn. Psa. 51:11¹¹Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. (Psalm 51:11).

For divine comfort. Psa. 4:6⁶There be many that say, Who will show us any good? Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. (Psalm 4:6). Psa 119:76⁷⁶Let, I pray thee, thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant. (Psalm 119:76).

For mitigation of troubles. Psa. 39: 12, 13.

For deliverance. Psa. 25:17, 22¹⁷The troubles of my heart are enlarged: O bring thou me out of my distresses. (Psalm 25:17)
²²Redeem Israel, O God, out of all his troubles. (Psalm 25:22). Psa. 39:10¹⁰Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thine hand. (Psalm 39:10). Isa. 64:9-12⁹Be not wroth very sore, O Lord, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people. ¹⁰Thy holy cities are a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation. ¹¹Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned up with fire: and all our pleasant things are laid waste. ¹²Wilt thou refrain thyself for these things, O Lord? wilt thou hold thy peace, and afflict us very sore? (Isaiah 64:9‑12). Jer. 17:14¹⁴Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise. (Jeremiah 17:14).

For pardon and deliverance from sin. Psa. 39:8⁸Deliver me from all my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish. (Psalm 39:8). Psa. 51:1¹<<To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bath-sheba.>> Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. (Psalm 51:1). Psa. 79:8⁸O remember not against us former iniquities: let thy tender mercies speedily prevent us: for we are brought very low. (Psalm 79:8).

That we may be turned to God. Psa. 80:7⁷Turn us again, O God of hosts, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved. (Psalm 80:7). Psa. 85:4-6⁴Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease. ⁵Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations? ⁶Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee? (Psalm 85:4‑6). Jer. 31:18¹⁸I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the Lord my God. (Jeremiah 31:18).

For divine teaching and direction. Job 34:32³²That which I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more. (Job 34:32). Psa. 27:11¹¹Teach me thy way, O Lord, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies. (Psalm 27:11). Psa. 143:10¹⁰Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness. (Psalm 143:10).

For increase of faith. Mar. 9:24.

For mercy. Psa. 6:2²Have mercy upon me, O Lord; for I am weak: O Lord, heal me; for my bones are vexed. (Psalm 6:2). Hab. 3:2²O Lord, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O Lord, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy. (Habakkuk 3:2).

For restoration to joy. Psa. 51:8, 12⁸Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. (Psalm 51:8)
¹²Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. (Psalm 51:12).

Psa. 69:29²⁹But I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high. (Psalm 69:29). Psa. 90:14, 15¹⁴O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. ¹⁵Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil. (Psalm 90:14‑15).

For protection and preservation from enemies. 2 Kin. 19:19. 2 Chr. 20:12¹²O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee. (2 Chronicles 20:12). Psa. 17:8, 9⁸Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings, ⁹From the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me about. (Psalm 17:8‑9).

That we may know the causes of our trouble. Job 6:24²⁴Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred. (Job 6:24). Job 10:2²I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; show me wherefore thou contendest with me. (Job 10:2). Job 13:23, 24²³How many are mine iniquities and sins? make me to know my transgression and my sin. ²⁴Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and holdest me for thine enemy? (Job 13:23‑24).

That we may be taught the uncertainty of life. Psa. 39:4⁴Lord, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am. (Psalm 39:4).

That we may be quickened. Psa. 143:11¹¹Quicken me, O Lord, for thy name's sake: for thy righteousness' sake bring my soul out of trouble. (Psalm 143:11).
