Anointing, Sacred.

Antiquity of. Gen. 28:18¹⁸And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it. (Genesis 28:18). Gen. 35:14¹⁴And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon. (Genesis 35:14).

Consecrates to God's service. Exo. 30:29²⁹And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy: whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy. (Exodus 30:29).

PERSONS WHO RECEIVED

Prophets. 1 Kin. 19:16. Isa. 61:1¹The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; (Isaiah 61:1).

Priests. Exo. 40:13-15¹³And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him; that he may minister unto me in the priest's office. ¹⁴And thou shalt bring his sons, and clothe them with coats: ¹⁵And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office: for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations. (Exodus 40:13‑15).

Kings. Jud. 9:8. 1 Sam. 9:16¹⁶To morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me. (1 Samuel 9:16). 1 Kin. 1:34.

THINGS WHICH RECEIVED

Tabernacle, &c. Exo. 30:26, 27²⁶And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith, and the ark of the testimony, ²⁷And the table and all his vessels, and the candlestick and his vessels, and the altar of incense, (Exodus 30:26‑27). Exo. 40:9⁹And thou shalt take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle, and all that is therein, and shalt hallow it, and all the vessels thereof: and it shall be holy. (Exodus 40:9).

Brazen altar. Exo. 29:36³⁶And thou shalt offer every day a bullock for a sin offering for atonement: and thou shalt cleanse the altar, when thou hast made an atonement for it, and thou shalt anoint it, to sanctify it. (Exodus 29:36). Exo. 40:10¹⁰And thou shalt anoint the altar of the burnt offering, and all his vessels, and sanctify the altar: and it shall be an altar most holy. (Exodus 40:10).

Brazen laver. Exo. 40:11¹¹And thou shalt anoint the laver and his foot, and sanctify it. (Exodus 40:11).

THOSE WHO PARTOOK OF

Protected by God. 1 Chr. 16:22²²Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm. (1 Chronicles 16:22). Psa. 105:15¹⁵Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm. (Psalm 105:15).

Not to be injured or insulted. 1 Sam. 24:6⁶And he said unto his men, The Lord forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the Lord's anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the Lord. (1 Samuel 24:6). 1 Sam. 26:9⁹And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the Lord's anointed, and be guiltless? (1 Samuel 26:9). 2 Sam. 1:14, 15¹⁴And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the Lord's anointed? ¹⁵And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died. (2 Samuel 1:14‑15). 2 Sam. 19:21²¹But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the Lord's anointed? (2 Samuel 19:21).

OIL OR OINTMENT FOR

Divinely prescribed. Exo. 30:23²³Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels, (Exodus 30:23)

Compounded by the priests. 1 Chr. 9:30³⁰And some of the sons of the priests made the ointment of the spices. (1 Chronicles 9:30).

An holy anointing oil forever. Exo. 30:25, 31²⁵And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil. (Exodus 30:25)
³¹And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, This shall be an holy anointing oil unto me throughout your generations. (Exodus 30:31).

Not to be imitated. Exo. 30:32³²Upon man's flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall ye make any other like it, after the composition of it: it is holy, and it shall be holy unto you. (Exodus 30:32).

To be put on no stranger. Exo. 30: 33.

Jews condemned for imitating. Eze. 23:41⁴¹And satest upon a stately bed, and a table prepared before it, whereupon thou hast set mine incense and mine oil. (Ezekiel 23:41).

ILLUSTRATIVE OF THE ANOINTING

Of Christ with the Holy Ghost. Psa. 45:7⁷Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. (Psalm 45:7). Isa. 61:1¹The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; (Isaiah 61:1), with Luke 4:18¹⁸The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, (Luke 4:18).

Of saints with the Holy Ghost. 1 John 2:27²⁷But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. (1 John 2:27).
