Doctrinal Definitions

This word is not found in
Scripture
, but the
truth
of it most certainly is. It refers to the essential substance of
God
. There are at least
ten
outstanding attributes of deity in the Persons of the
Godhead
. They are:
• Eternality
—He is an ever-existing,
eternal
Person, having no
beginning
or end (
Gen. 21:33

And Abraham planted a grove in Beer-sheba, and called there on the name of the Lord, the everlasting God. (Genesis 21:33)

The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them. (Deuteronomy 33:27)

• Infinity
—There are no boundaries to the greatness of His Person (
1 Kings 8:27

• Omniscience
—He is all-knowing (
Psa. 139:2-4

• Omnipotence
—He is all-powerful (
Matt. 28:18

• Omnipresence
—He is everywhere (
Psa. 139:7-8

Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

•
Immutability
—He is unchanging in character (
Mal. 3:6

• Impeccability
—He is incapable of sinning—being holy (
Num. 23:19

God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? (Numbers 23:19)

• Sovereignty
—He controls the course of world history by His providence (

• Self-sufficiency
—He is independent of all creatures (
Isa. 40:13-14

Righteousness
—
He is right in all of His dealings with His creatures
