26And if the man have none to redeem it, and himself be able to redeem it;
27Then let him count the years of the sale thereof, and restore the overplus unto the man to whom he sold it; that he may return unto his possession.

 The subject is not being born again, but a seal put on believers, a demonstration and earnest of their future full participation in the heritage that belongs to Christ—an inheritance to which He has a right through redemption, whereby He has purchased all things to Himself, but which He will only appropriate by His power when He shall have gathered together all the coheirs to enjoy it with Him. (Ephesians 1 by J.N. Darby)
 The Holy Spirit is not the earnest of love. The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who is given unto us. God loves us as He will love us in heaven. (Ephesians 1 by J.N. Darby)
 This earnest is the power of the Holy Spirit giving a believer now present joy, present anticipation of the glory to which he is going. (Remarks on Ephesians 1:13-14 by W. Kelly)
 We are sealed because redemption is finished. If I look at glory, it is not finished. Therefore the figure is changed when he speaks of our inheritance. (Remarks on Ephesians 1:13-14 by W. Kelly)
 And as there are two great parts in God's choice of us personally, so the Holy Spirit takes a double relationship. He is the seal of the grace and blessing that we have in Christ, and He is the earnest of the glory we are going to have with Christ. (Remarks on Ephesians 1:13-14 by W. Kelly)
 The anointing of the Spirit is for power and discernment (1 John 2:18-21, 24-27). The sealing of the Spirit is for our assurance (Eph. 1:13; 4:30). The earnest of the Spirit is for our present enjoyment of what is coming in the future (Eph. 1:14). J. N. Darby Translation

who is the earnest of our inheritance tog the redemption of the acquired possession to the praise of his glory.

JND Translation Notes

+
g
Or "up to," eis. It is more than "till," because it has the inheritance in view. Compare Gal. 3.24. It may be translated "for the redemption," connecting it with "sealed," instead of with "earnest"; thus, "Ye have been sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, (who is the earnest of our inheritance,) for," etc.

W. Kelly Translation

+
14
who is earnest of our inheritance, for [the] redemption of the purchased possession unto [the] praise of his glory.
