Can be increased in intensity. Dan. 3:19, 22¹⁹Then was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego: therefore he spake, and commanded that they should heat the furnace one seven times more than it was wont to be heated. (Daniel 3:19)
²²Therefore because the king's commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. (Daniel 3:22).

Though small, kindles a great matter. James 3:5⁵Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! (James 3:5).

THINGS CONNECTED WITH

Burning coals. Prov. 26:21²¹As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife. (Proverbs 26:21).

Flame. SoS. 8:6. Isa. 66:15¹⁵For, behold, the Lord will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. (Isaiah 66:15).

Sparks. Job 18:5⁵Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine. (Job 18:5). Isa. 1:31³¹And the strong shall be as tow, and the maker of it as a spark, and they shall both burn together, and none shall quench them. (Isaiah 1:31).

Ashes. 1 Kin. 13:3. 2 Peter 2:6⁶And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; (2 Peter 2:6).

Smoke. Isa. 34:10¹⁰It shall not be quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up for ever: from generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever. (Isaiah 34:10). Joel 2:30³⁰And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. (Joel 2:30).

Kept alive by fuel. Prov. 26:20²⁰Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth. (Proverbs 26:20). Isa. 9:5⁵For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire. (Isaiah 9:5).

CHARACTERIZED AS

Bright. Ezek. 1:13¹³As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. (Ezekiel 1:13).

Spreading. James 3:5⁵Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! (James 3:5).

Enlightening. Psa. 78:14¹⁴In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire. (Psalm 78:14). Psa. 105:39³⁹He spread a cloud for a covering; and fire to give light in the night. (Psalm 105:39).

Heating. Mar. 14:54.

Melting. Psa. 68:2²As smoke is driven away, so drive them away: as wax melteth before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God. (Psalm 68:2). Isa. 64:2²As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence! (Isaiah 64:2).

Purifying. Num. 31:23²³Every thing that may abide the fire, ye shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be clean: nevertheless it shall be purified with the water of separation: and all that abideth not the fire ye shall make go through the water. (Numbers 31:23). 1 Peter 1:7⁷That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: (1 Peter 1:7). Rev. 3:18¹⁸I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. (Revelation 3:18).

Drying. Job 15:30³⁰He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away. (Job 15:30). Joel 1:20²⁰The beasts of the field cry also unto thee: for the rivers of waters are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness. (Joel 1:20).

Consuming. Judg. 15:4, 5⁴And Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between two tails. ⁵And when he had set the brands on fire, he let them go into the standing corn of the Philistines, and burnt up both the shocks, and also the standing corn, with the vineyards and olives. (Judges 15:4‑5). Psa. 46:9⁹He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. (Psalm 46:9). Isa. 10:16,17¹⁶Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire. ¹⁷And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day; (Isaiah 10:16‑17).

Insatiable. Prov. 30:16¹⁶The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough. (Proverbs 30:16).

SACRED

Came from before the Lord. Lev. 9:24²⁴And there came a fire out from before the Lord, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat: which when all the people saw, they shouted, and fell on their faces. (Leviticus 9:24).

Always burning on the altar. Lev. 6:13¹³The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out. (Leviticus 6:13)

All burnt offerings consumed by. Lev. 6:9,12⁹Command Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the law of the burnt offering: It is the burnt offering, because of the burning upon the altar all night unto the morning, and the fire of the altar shall be burning in it. (Leviticus 6:9)
¹²And the fire upon the altar shall be burning in it; it shall not be put out: and the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order upon it; and he shall burn thereon the fat of the peace offerings. (Leviticus 6:12).

Incense burned with. Lev. 16:12¹²And he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before the Lord, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the vail: (Leviticus 16:12). Num. 16:46⁴⁶And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and put on incense, and go quickly unto the congregation, and make an atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from the Lord; the plague is begun. (Numbers 16:46).

Guilt of burning incense without. Lev. 10:1¹And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the Lord, which he commanded them not. (Leviticus 10:1).

Restored to the temple. 2 Chr. 7:1¹Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the Lord filled the house. (2 Chronicles 7:1)-.3.

Frequently employed as an instrument of divine vengeance. Psa. 97:3³A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about. (Psalm 97:3). Isa. 47:14¹⁴Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it. (Isaiah 47:14). Isa. 66:16¹⁶For by fire and by his sword will the Lord plead with all flesh: and the slain of the Lord shall be many. (Isaiah 66:16).

MIRACULOUS

In the burning bush. Ex. 3:2²And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. (Exodus 3:2).

Plagued the Egyptians. Ex. 9:23, 24²³And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven: and the Lord sent thunder and hail, and the fire ran along upon the ground; and the Lord rained hail upon the land of Egypt. ²⁴So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, very grievous, such as there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation. (Exodus 9:23‑24).

Led the people of Israel in the desert. Ex. 13:22²²He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people. (Exodus 13:22). Ex. 40:38³⁸For the cloud of the Lord was upon the tabernacle by day, and fire was on it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys. (Exodus 40:38).

On Mount Sinai at giving of law. Deut. 4:11, 36¹¹And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness. (Deuteronomy 4:11)
³⁶Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice, that he might instruct thee: and upon earth he showed thee his great fire; and thou heardest his words out of the midst of the fire. (Deuteronomy 4:36).

Destroyed Nadab and Abihu. Lev. 10:2²And there went out fire from the Lord, and devoured them, and they died before the Lord. (Leviticus 10:2).

Destroyed the people at Taberah. Num. 11:1¹And when the people complained, it displeased the Lord: and the Lord heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the Lord burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp. (Numbers 11:1).

Consumed the company of Korah. Num. 16:35³⁵And there came out a fire from the Lord, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense. (Numbers 16:35).

Consumed the sacrifice of Gideon. Judg. 6:21²¹Then the angel of the Lord put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the Lord departed out of his sight. (Judges 6:21).

Angel ascended in. Judg. 13:20²⁰For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground. (Judges 13:20).

Consumed the sacrifice of Elijah. 1 Kin. 18:38.

Destroyed the enemies of Elijah. 2 Kin. 1:10, 12.

Elijah taken up in a chariot of. 2 Kin. 2:11.

God appeared in. Ex. 3:2²And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. (Exodus 3:2). Ex. 19:18¹⁸And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. (Exodus 19:18).

Christ shall appear in. Dan. 7:10¹⁰A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened. (Daniel 7:10). 2 Thess. 1:8⁸In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: (2 Thessalonians 1:8).

Punishment of the wicked shall be in. Matt. 13:42⁴²And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 13:42). Matt. 25:41⁴¹Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: (Matthew 25:41).

IN HOUSES

Lighted in the winter. Jer. 36:22²²Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the ninth month: and there was a fire on the hearth burning before him. (Jeremiah 36:22).

Lighted in spring mornings. John 18:18¹⁸And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself. (John 18:18).

Not to be lighted on the Sabbath. Ex. 35:3³Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day. (Exodus 35:3).

Made of charcoal. John 18:8⁸Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: (John 18:8).

Made of wood. Acts 28:3³And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand. (Acts 28:3).

Injury from, to be made good by the person who kindled it. Ex. 22:6⁶If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field, be consumed therewith; he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution. (Exodus 22:6).

ILLUSTRATIVE OF

God's protection. Num. 9:16¹⁶So it was alway: the cloud covered it by day, and the appearance of fire by night. (Numbers 9:16). Zech. 2:5⁵For I, saith the Lord, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her. (Zechariah 2:5).

God's vengeance. Deut. 4:24²⁴For the Lord thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God. (Deuteronomy 4:24). Heb. 12:29²⁹For our God is a consuming fire. (Hebrews 12:29).

Christ as judge. Isa. 10:17¹⁷And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day; (Isaiah 10:17). Mal. 3:2²But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: (Malachi 3:2).

The Holy Spirit. Isa. 4:4⁴When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning. (Isaiah 4:4). Acts 2:3³And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. (Acts 2:3).

The church destroying her enemies. Oba. 18 v.

The word of God. Jer. 5:14¹⁴Wherefore thus saith the Lord God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them. (Jeremiah 5:14). Jer. 23:29²⁹Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? (Jeremiah 23:29).

Zeal of saints. Psa. 39:3³My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned: then spake I with my tongue, (Psalm 39:3). Psa. 119:139¹³⁹My zeal hath consumed me, because mine enemies have forgotten thy words. (Psalm 119:139).

Zeal of angels. Psa. 104:4⁴Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire: (Psalm 104:4). Heb. 1:7⁷And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. (Hebrews 1:7).

God's enemies. Isa. 10:17¹⁷And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day; (Isaiah 10:17). Oba. 18 v.

Lust. Prov. 6:27, 28²⁷Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? ²⁸Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned? (Proverbs 6:27‑28).

Wickedness. Isa. 9:18¹⁸For wickedness burneth as the fire: it shall devour the briers and thorns, and shall kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke. (Isaiah 9:18).

The tongue. Prov. 16:27²⁷An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire. (Proverbs 16:27). James 3:6⁶And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. (James 3:6).

The self-righteous. Isa. 65:5⁵Which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day. (Isaiah 65:5).

The hope of hypocrites. Isa. 50:11¹¹Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow. (Isaiah 50:11).

Persecution. Luke 12:49-53⁴⁹I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? ⁵⁰But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! ⁵¹Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: ⁵²For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. ⁵³The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. (Luke 12:49‑53).

Affliction. Isa. 43:2²When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. (Isaiah 43:2).

Judgments. Jer. 48:45⁴⁵They that fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon because of the force: but a fire shall come forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sihon, and shall devour the corner of Moab, and the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones. (Jeremiah 48:45). Lam. 1:13¹³From above hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them: he hath spread a net for my feet, he hath turned me back: he hath made me desolate and faint all the day. (Lamentations 1:13). Ezek. 39:6⁶And I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the Lord. (Ezekiel 39:6).
