Origin of. Gen. 3:7, 21⁷And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. (Genesis 3:7)
²¹Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them. (Genesis 3:21).

CALLED

Raiment. Gen. 28:20²⁰And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, (Genesis 28:20). Deut. 8:4⁴Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years. (Deuteronomy 8:4).

Clothes. Prov. 6:27²⁷Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? (Proverbs 6:27). Ezek. 16:39³⁹And I will also give thee into their hand, and they shall throw down thine eminent place, and shall break down thy high places: they shall strip thee also of thy clothes, and shall take thy fair jewels, and leave thee naked and bare. (Ezekiel 16:39).

Clothing. Job 22:6⁶For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing. (Job 22:6). Job 31:19¹⁹If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering; (Job 31:19).

Vesture. Gen. 41:42⁴²And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck; (Genesis 41:42). Rev. 19:16¹⁶And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. (Revelation 19:16).

MATERIALS USED FOR,

Wool. Prov. 27:26²⁶The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field. (Proverbs 27:26). Ezek. 34:3³Ye eat the fat, and ye clothe you with the wool, ye kill them that are fed: but ye feed not the flock. (Ezekiel 34:3).

Silk. Prov. 31:22²²She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. (Proverbs 31:22).

Linen. Lev. 6:10¹⁰And the priest shall put on his linen garment, and his linen breeches shall he put upon his flesh, and take up the ashes which the fire hath consumed with the burnt offering on the altar, and he shall put them beside the altar. (Leviticus 6:10). Esther 8:15¹⁵And Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white, and with a great crown of gold, and with a garment of fine linen and purple: and the city of Shushan rejoiced and was glad. (Esther 8:15).

Camel's hair. Matt. 3:4⁴And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. (Matthew 3:4).

Skins. Heb. 11:37³⁷They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Hebrews 11:37).

Sackcloth. 2 Sam. 3:31³¹And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. And king David himself followed the bier. (2 Samuel 3:31). 2 Kin. 19:1

Not to he made of mixed materials. Deut. 22:11¹¹Thou shalt not wear a garment of divers sorts, as of woollen and linen together. (Deuteronomy 22:11).

Of the sexes, not to be interchanged. Deut. 22:5⁵The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God. (Deuteronomy 22:5).

COLORS OF, MENTIONED

White. Ecc. 9:8.

Blue. Ezek. 23:6⁶Which were clothed with blue, captains and rulers, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding upon horses. (Ezekiel 23:6).

Purple. Ezek. 7:27²⁷The king shall mourn, and the prince shall be clothed with desolation, and the hands of the people of the land shall be troubled: I will do unto them after their way, and according to their deserts will I judge them; and they shall know that I am the Lord. (Ezekiel 7:27). Luke 16:19¹⁹There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: (Luke 16:19).

Scarlet. 2 Sam. 1:24²⁴Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who put on ornaments of gold upon your apparel. (2 Samuel 1:24). Dan. 5:7⁷The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and show me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom. (Daniel 5:7).

Different colors. Gen. 37:3³Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colors. (Genesis 37:3). 2 Sam. 13:18¹⁸And she had a garment of divers colors upon her: for with such robes were the king's daughters that were virgins apparelled. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her. (2 Samuel 13:18).

Were often fringed and bordered. Num. 15:38³⁸Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue: (Numbers 15:38). Deut. 22:12¹²Thou shalt make thee fringes upon the four quarters of thy vesture, wherewith thou coverest thyself. (Deuteronomy 22:12).

Scribes and Pharisees condemned for making broad the borders of. Matt. 23:5⁵But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, (Matthew 23:5).

Worn long and flowing. Luke 20:46⁴⁶Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts; (Luke 20:46). Rev. 1:13¹³And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. (Revelation 1:13).

Girt up during employment. Luke 17:8⁸And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink? (Luke 17:8). John 13:4⁴He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. (John 13:4).

MENTIONED IN SCRIPTURE

Hyke or upper garment. Deut. 24:13¹³In any case thou shalt deliver him the pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own raiment, and bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the Lord thy God. (Deuteronomy 24:13). Matt. 21:8⁸And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. (Matthew 21:8).

Burnoose or cloak. Luke 6:29²⁹And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also. (Luke 6:29). 2 Tim. 4:13¹³The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments. (2 Timothy 4:13).

Tunic or coat. John 19:23²³Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. (John 19:23). John 21:7⁷Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea. (John 21:7).

Girdle. 1 Sam. 18:4⁴And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle. (1 Samuel 18:4). Acts 21:11¹¹And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. (Acts 21:11).

Bonnet or hat. Lev. 8:13¹³And Moses brought Aaron's sons, and put coats upon them, and girded them with girdles, and put bonnets upon them; as the Lord commanded Moses. (Leviticus 8:13). Dan. 3:21²¹Then these men were bound in their coats, their hosen, and their hats, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. (Daniel 3:21).

Shoe or sandal. Ex. 3:5⁵And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. (Exodus 3:5). Mar. 6:9.

Vail. Gen. 24:65⁶⁵For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself. (Genesis 24:65).

Liable to plague and leprosy. Lev. 13:47-59⁴⁷The garment also that the plague of leprosy is in, whether it be a woollen garment, or a linen garment; ⁴⁸Whether it be in the warp, or woof; of linen, or of woollen; whether in a skin, or in any thing made of skin; ⁴⁹And if the plague be greenish or reddish in the garment, or in the skin, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in any thing of skin; it is a plague of leprosy, and shall be showed unto the priest: ⁵⁰And the priest shall look upon the plague, and shut up it that hath the plague seven days: ⁵¹And he shall look on the plague on the seventh day: if the plague be spread in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in a skin, or in any work that is made of skin; the plague is a fretting leprosy; it is unclean. ⁵²He shall therefore burn that garment, whether warp or woof, in woollen or in linen, or any thing of skin, wherein the plague is: for it is a fretting leprosy; it shall be burnt in the fire. ⁵³And if the priest shall look, and, behold, the plague be not spread in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in any thing of skin; ⁵⁴Then the priest shall command that they wash the thing wherein the plague is, and he shall shut it up seven days more: ⁵⁵And the priest shall look on the plague, after that it is washed: and, behold, if the plague have not changed his color, and the plague be not spread; it is unclean; thou shalt burn it in the fire; it is fret inward, whether it be bare within or without. ⁵⁶And if the priest look, and, behold, the plague be somewhat dark after the washing of it; then he shall rend it out of the garment, or out of the skin, or out of the warp, or out of the woof: ⁵⁷And if it appear still in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in any thing of skin; it is a spreading plague: thou shalt burn that wherein the plague is with fire. ⁵⁸And the garment, either warp, or woof, or whatsoever thing of skin it be, which thou shalt wash, if the plague be departed from them, then it shall be washed the second time, and shall be clean. ⁵⁹This is the law of the plague of leprosy in a garment of woollen or linen, either in the warp, or woof, or any thing of skins, to pronounce it clean, or to pronounce it unclean. (Leviticus 13:47‑59).

Cleansed by water from ceremonial uncleanness. Lev. 11:32³²And upon whatsoever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatsoever vessel it be, wherein any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the even; so it shall be cleansed. (Leviticus 11:32). Num. 31:20²⁰And purify all your raiment, and all that is made of skins, and all work of goats' hair, and all things made of wood. (Numbers 31:20).

OF THE RICH

Of the finest materials. Matt. 11:8⁸But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. (Matthew 11:8).

Gay. James 2:2, 3²For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; ³And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: (James 2:2‑3).

Gorgeous. Luke 7:25²⁵But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. (Luke 7:25). Acts 12:21²¹And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. (Acts 12:21).

Embroidered. Psa. 45:14¹⁴She shall be brought unto the king in raiment of needlework: the virgins her companions that follow her shall be brought unto thee. (Psalm 45:14). Ezek. 16:18¹⁸And tookest thy broidered garments, and coveredst them: and thou hast set mine oil and mine incense before them. (Ezekiel 16:18).

Perfumed. Psa. 45:8⁸All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad. (Psalm 45:8). SoS. 4:11.

Multiplied and heaped up. Job 27:16¹⁶Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay; (Job 27:16). Isa. 3:22²²The changeable suits of apparel, and the mantles, and the wimples, and the crisping pins, (Isaiah 3:22).

Often moth-eaten. Job 13:28²⁸And he, as a rotten thing, consumeth, as a garment that is moth eaten. (Job 13:28). James 5:2²Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. (James 5:2).

OF THE POOR

Provided specially by God. Deut. 10:18¹⁸He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment. (Deuteronomy 10:18).

Vile. James 2:2²For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; (James 2:2).

Used as a covering by night. Deut. 24:13¹³In any case thou shalt deliver him the pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own raiment, and bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the Lord thy God. (Deuteronomy 24:13).

Not to be retained in pledge. Deut. 24:12, 13¹²And if the man be poor, thou shalt not sleep with his pledge: ¹³In any case thou shalt deliver him the pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own raiment, and bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the Lord thy God. (Deuteronomy 24:12‑13).

Grew old and wore out. Josh. 9:5⁵And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy. (Joshua 9:5). Psa. 102:26²⁶They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: (Psalm 102:26).

Of Israel preserved for forty years. Deut. 8:4⁴Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years. (Deuteronomy 8:4).

Were often changed. Gen. 35:2²Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments: (Genesis 35:2). Gen. 41:14¹⁴Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh. (Genesis 41:14).

Of those slain with a sword not used Isa. 14:19¹⁹But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet. (Isaiah 14:19).

Given as a token of covenants. 1 Sam. 18:4⁴And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle. (1 Samuel 18:4).

Given presents. Gen. 45:22²²To all of them he gave each man changes of raiment; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver, and five changes of raiment. (Genesis 45:22). 2 Kin. 5:22

Often rent In affliction. 2 Sam. 15:32³²And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head: (2 Samuel 15:32). Ezra 9:3, 5³And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied. (Ezra 9:3)
⁵And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the Lord my God, (Ezra 9:5).

ILLUSTRATIVE

(White,) of righteousness. Matt. 28:3³His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: (Matthew 28:3). Rev. 3:18¹⁸I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. (Revelation 3:18).

(Rolled in blood,) of victory, Isa. 9:5⁵For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire. (Isaiah 9:5).

(Washed in wine,) of abundance. Gen. 49:11¹¹Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass's colt unto the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes: (Genesis 49:11).
