The lowest part of a building, and on which it rests. Luke 14:29²⁹Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, (Luke 14:29). Acts 16:26²⁶And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed. (Acts 16:26).

FIGURATIVELY APPLIED TO

The heavens. 2 Sam. 22:8⁸Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations of heaven moved and shook, because he was wroth. (2 Samuel 22:8).

The earth. Job 38:4⁴Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. (Job 38:4). Psa. 104:5⁵Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever. (Psalm 104:5).

The world. Psa. 18:15¹⁵Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke, O Lord, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils. (Psalm 18:15). Matt. 13:35³⁵That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world. (Matthew 13:35).

The mountains. Deut. 32:22²²For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains. (Deuteronomy 32:22).

The ocean. Psa. 104:8⁸They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys unto the place which thou hast founded for them. (Psalm 104:8).

Kingdoms. Ex. 9:18¹⁸Behold, to morrow about this time I will cause it to rain a very grievous hail, such as hath not been in Egypt since the foundation thereof even until now. (Exodus 9:18).

LAID FOR

Cities. Josh. 6:26²⁶And Joshua adjured them at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before the Lord, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it. (Joshua 6:26). 1 King 16:34.

Walls. Ezra 4:12¹²Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations. (Ezra 4:12). Rev. 21:14¹⁴And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. (Revelation 21:14).

Houses. Luke 6:48⁴⁸He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. (Luke 6:48).

Temples. 1 Kin. 6:37. Ezra 3:10¹⁰And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord, they set the priests in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals, to praise the Lord, after the ordinance of David king of Israel. (Ezra 3:10).

Towers. Luke 14:28, 29²⁸For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? ²⁹Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, (Luke 14:28‑29).

Of stone. 1 Kin. 5:17.

Deep laid. Luke 6:48⁴⁸He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. (Luke 6:48).

Strongly laid. Ezra 6:3³In the first year of Cyrus the king the same Cyrus the king made a decree concerning the house of God at Jerusalem, Let the house be builded, the place where they offered sacrifices, and let the foundations thereof be strongly laid; the height thereof threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof threescore cubits; (Ezra 6:3).

Joined together by corner stones. Ezra 4:12¹²Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations. (Ezra 4:12), with 1 Peter 2:6⁶Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. (1 Peter 2:6), and Eph. 2:20²⁰And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; (Ephesians 2:20).

Security afforded by. Matt. 7:25²⁵And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. (Matthew 7:25). Luke 6:48⁴⁸He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. (Luke 6:48).

ILLUSTRATIVE OF

Christ. Isa. 28:16¹⁶Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. (Isaiah 28:16). 1 Cor. 3:11¹¹For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 3:11).

Doctrines of the apostles, &c. Eph. 2:20²⁰And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; (Ephesians 2:20).

First principles of the gospel. Heb. 6:1, 2¹Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, ²Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. (Hebrews 6:1‑2).

Decrees and purposes of God. 2 Tim. 2:19¹⁹Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. (2 Timothy 2:19).

Magistrates. Psa. 82:5⁵They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course. (Psalm 82:5).

The righteous. Prov. 10:25²⁵As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation. (Proverbs 10:25).

Hope of saints. Psa. 87:1¹<<A Psalm or Song for the sons of Korah.>> His foundation is in the holy mountains. (Psalm 87:1).

Security of saints' inheritance. Heb. 11:10¹⁰For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. (Hebrews 11:10).
