Why is mercy introduced here? Because they needed the mercy, they were no longer addressed as the Church, but as individuals. In all the closing writings of the New Testament the Church is looked at as a thing judged (that is, the professing thing on earth). (Jude by J.N. Darby)
This is the only place where mercy is said to the saints generally…Because they deeply needed the comfort. An individual ought always to feel the deep need of mercy, especially in the face of danger, and also the sense of personal unworthiness; and now he gives the comfort of it to all these saints because of their imminent danger. (Jude 2-3 by W. Kelly)
Mercy is the first thing (see v. 21), for in view of the circumstances in which they were found this was their primary need, mercy for their weakness (compare Heb. 4:16). (article #86561)
Also peace, not peace with God, but peace, peace absolutely, which possesses the whole soul, and in the power of which we can walk with unruffled composure in the presence of the greatest dangers. (article #86561)
Love is added—the expression of the divine nature, that holy circle and atmosphere into which the redeemed are brought, and in which they live. (article #86561)
