The trees.This is the most ancient fable or apologue extant; and is extremely beautiful, apposite, and intelligible.
2 Kings 14:9• 9{i}And Jehoash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thorn-bush that is in Lebanon sent to the cedar that is in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son as wife; and there passed by the wild beast that is in Lebanon, and trode down the thorn-bush.{/i} (2 Kings 14:9)
;
Ezek. 17:3‑10• 3and say, Thus hath said the Lord Jehovah, The great eagle, great of wings, long of pinion, which was rich in many colours, came unto Lebanon and took the highest branch of the cedar;
4he cropped the topmost of its young twigs, and brought it to the land of traffic; he set it in a city of merchants.
5And he took of the seed of the land, and put it in a field of seed; he placed it by great waters, he set it as a willow.
6And it sprouted, and became a spreading vine of low stature, the tendrils of which should turn towards him, and its roots be under him: so it became a vine and brought forth branches and sent out shoots.
7And there was another great eagle with great wings and much plumage; and, behold, this vine did bend its roots toward him and shot forth its tendrils toward him, that he might water it from the terraces of its plantation.
8It was planted in a good soil by great waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine.
9Say thou, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah, Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up the roots thereof, and cut off the fruit thereof, that it wither? it shall wither in all the leaves of her spring, even without great power or many people to pluck it up by the roots thereof.
10Yea, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind toucheth it? it shall wither in the furrows where it grew.
(Ezek. 17:3‑10)
;
Dan. 4:10‑18• 10{i}Thus were the visions of my head upon my bed: I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great.{/i}
11{i}The tree grew, and was strong, and its height reached unto the heavens, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth.{/i}
12{i}Its leaves were beautiful, and its fruit abundant, and in it was food for all: the beasts of the field found shade under it, and the birds of the heavens dwelt in its branches, and all flesh was fed from it.{/i}
13{i}I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and behold, a watcher and a holy one came down from the heavens;{/i}
14{i}he cried aloud, and said thus: Hew down the tree, and cut off its branches, shake off its leaves, and scatter its fruit; let the beasts get away from under it, and the birds from its branches.{/i}
15{i}Nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be bathed with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth.{/i}
16{i}Let his heart be changed from man's, and let a beast's heart be given unto him; and let seven times pass over him.{/i}
17{i}This sentence is by the decree of the watchers, and the decision by the word of the holy ones: that the living may know that the Most High ruleth over the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.{/i}
18{i}This dream I, king Nebuchadnezzar, have seen; and thou, Belteshazzar, tell the interpretation, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation; but thou art able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.{/i}

olive tree.The {zayith,} or olive tree, in the Linnean system, is a genus of the {diandra monogynia} class of plants.
It is of a moderate height, and grows best in sunny places.
Its trunk is knotty; bark smooth, of an ash colour:
wood solid and yellowish; leaves oblong, almost like those of the willow, of a dark green colour on the upper side, and whitish below.
In June it puts forth white flowers, growing in bunches, each of one piece, widening towards the top, and dividing into four parts.
After this succeeds the fruit, which is oblong and plump; first green, then pale, and when quite ripe, black. Within it is enclosed a hard stone, filled with oblong seeds. It was the most useful of all trees in the forest; as the bramble was the meanest and most worthless.Reign.
 In his recital, three trees refuse to be promoted over the other trees. They depict, according to the word, the different characteristics of Israel under the blessing of Jehovah. (Fresh Declension and Fresh Revivals: Abimelech, or the Usurpation of Authority: Judges 9 by H.L. Rossier)
 The world is to the church, what the nations were to Israel. If we yield to its solicitations, we abandon our oil, our fruit, our new wine-that is to say, {oil} our spiritual power, {fig} the works which God has prepared for us (Eph. 2:10), {vine} and the joy of communion.
