Judg. 10:7‑18• 7{i}And the anger of Jehovah was hot against Israel, and he sold him into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the children of Ammon.{/i}
8{i}And they oppressed and crushed the children of Israel in that year; eighteen years they oppressed all the children of Israel that were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead.{/i}
9{i}And the children of Ammon passed over the Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim; and Israel was greatly distressed.{/i}
10{i}And the children of Israel cried to Jehovah, saying, We have sinned against thee, both because we have forsaken our God, and also served the Baals.{/i}
11{i}And Jehovah said to the children of Israel, Did I not save you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines?{/i}
12{i}The Zidonians also, and Amalek and Maon oppressed you, and ye cried to me, and I saved you out of their hand.{/i}
13{i}But ye have forsaken me, and served other gods; therefore I will save you no more.{/i}
14{i}Go and cry to the gods that ye have chosen: let them save you in the time of your trouble.{/i}
15{i}And the children of Israel said to Jehovah, We have sinned. Do thou unto us according to all that is good in thy sight; only deliver us, we pray thee, this day.{/i}
16{i}And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served Jehovah; and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.{/i}
17{i}And the children of Ammon were called together and encamped in Gilead; and the children of Israel gathered together and encamped in Mizpeh.{/i}
18{i}And the people, the chief men of Gilead, said one to another, Who is the man that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.{/i} (Judg. 10:7‑18)
Judg. 11:12‑40• 12{i}And Jephthah{/i} sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land?
13And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.
14{i}And Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the children of Ammon,{/i}
15{i}and said to him,{/i} Thus saith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon.
16When Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh,
17then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land; but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh.
18Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, {i}but came not within the border of Moab, for the Arnon is the border of Moab.{/i}
19And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.
20{i}But{/i} Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
21And Jehovah God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
22And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok. {i}and from the wilderness unto the Jordan.{/i}
23{i}And now{/i} Jehovah God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before His people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?
24Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever Jehovah our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.
25{i}And now{/i} art thou anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them,
26while Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years— {i}why did ye not recover them within that time?{/i}
27{i}So I have not sinned against thee, but it is thou who doest me wrong in making war against me. Jehovah, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon!{/i}
28{i}But the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not to the words of Jephthah that he had sent him.{/i}
29Then the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
30And Jephthah vowed a vow unto Jehovah, {i}and said, If thou wilt without fail give the children of Ammon into my hand,{/i}
31It shall be that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be Jehovah's, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.
32{i}And Jephthah passed over to the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Jehovah gave them into his hand.{/i}
33{i}And he smote them from Aroer until thou come to Minnith, twenty cities, even unto Abel-Cheramim, with a very great slaughter; and the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.{/i}
34{i}And Jephthah came to Mizpah to his house, and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambours and with dances; and she was an only child: besides her he had neither son nor daughter.{/i}
35{i}And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his garments, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth to Jehovah, and I cannot go back.{/i}
36{i}And she said to him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth to Jehovah, do to me according to that which has proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as Jehovah has taken vengeance for thee upon thine enemies, upon the children of Ammon.{/i}
37{i}And she said to her father, Let this thing be done for me: leave me alone two months, that I may go and descend to the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.{/i}
38{i}And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months. And she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.{/i}
39{i}And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned to her father, and he performed on her the vow that he had vowed; and she had known no man. And it became a fixed custom in Israel,{/i}
40{i}that from year to year the daughters of Israel go to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in the year.{/i} (Judg. 11:12‑40)
2 Sam. 10:1‑5• 1{i}And it came to pass after this that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.{/i}
2{i}And David said, I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.{/i}
3And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?
4Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.
5{i}And they told it to David; and he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Abide at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.{/i} (2 Sam. 10:1‑5)
Ezek. 25:3‑7• 3and say unto the sons of Ammon, Hear the word of the Lord Jehovah; Thus saith the Lord Jehovah; Because thou saidst, Aha, against my sanctuary, when it was profaned; and against the land of Israel, when it was desolate; and against the house of Judah, when they went into captivity;
4behold, therefore, I will deliver thee to the men of the east for a possession, and they shall set their villages in thee, and make their dwellings in thee: they shall eat thy fruit, and they shall drink thy milk.
5And I will make Rabbah a stable for camels, and the sons of Ammon a couching place for flocks: and ye shall know that I am Jehovah.
6For thus saith the Lord Jehovah; Because thou hast clapped thine hands, and stamped with the feet, and rejoiced in heart with all thy despite against the land of Israel;
7behold, therefore I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and will deliver thee for a spoil to the heathen; and I will cut thee off from the people, and I will cause thee to perish out of the countries: I will destroy thee; and thou shalt know that I am Jehovah. (Ezek. 25:3‑7)
