An. Ex. Is. 398.reigned one year.
Heb. the son of one year in his reigning. This verse is variously interpreted; but probably it only means, according to the Hebrew idiom, that, during the first year nothing remarkable occurred; but after two years, (or in the second year of his reign,) the subsequent events took place.
It is important to notice at the beginning of this new division of the book that Saul does not represent the flesh's premeditated opposition to the work of God, but much rather the efforts of the flesh to accomplish this work-the flesh introduced into a position of testimony....This chapter could be entitled: The foolishness and the weakness of the flesh. Saul wase … years old when he became king; and he reigned two years over Israel.

JND Translation Notes

e
Critics in general suppose a hiatus, from the difficulty there is in translating the present text, which would mean, "Saul was a year old when he became king." The whole verse is wanting, in LXX.
