Joab, the man whose craftiness we have seen from the very beginning; Joab, whose wickedness David had recognized, whom he had branded with the name "wicked man" before all the people, on whose head he had invoked God's judgment (2 Sam. 3:28-30), whom he had declared to be "too hard for me": this Joab is the man whom David's word gave occasion to become general in chief.
