 Here is the well-known principle which was applied by James at the council of Jerusalem to the divine right of recognizing under the gospel the Gentiles without being circumcised. His argument is that they do not require to become virtual Jews in order to get the blessing of God and to bear His name For to be circumcised is practically to be no longer a Gentile, but to become a Jew. Whereas now God is really making not Jews but Christians. Therefore to force circumcision on such Gentiles as believed was a total mistake...It was not inconsistent but in keeping with this, if as Gentiles they were called by His name now. James does not speak of this or any other prophetic citation being fulfilled at present. He simply quotes the broad fact from the Septuagint version, as agreeing with the principle generally laid down by the prophets that all the nations should be called by Jehovah’s name. This is indeed the characteristic of the millennial day. (Amos 9 by W. Kelly)

The LXX and their followers would seem to have read "men," and hence the application in Acts 15.17. But the manuscripts with one voice have "Edom." There can be no doubt that it is right.
