In the Old Testament times this was done with oil. Prophets (
1 Kings 19:16

And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room. (1 Kings 19:16)
) and kings (
1 Sam. 16:13

Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. (1 Samuel 16:13)
) were often anointed; priests were anointed with the holy oil (
Lev. 8:33; 10:7
