As administered by John. Mat. 3. 5-12. John. 3:23. Acts 13-24. Acts 19:4⁴Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. (Acts 19:4).

Sanctioned, by Christ's submission to it. Mat. 3:13-15. Luke 3:21²¹Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, (Luke 3:21).

Adopted by Christ. John. 3:22. John. 4:1, 2.

Appointed an ordinance of the Christian church. Mat. 28:19, 20. Mar. 16:15, 16.

To be administered in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Mat. 28:19.

Water, the outward and visible sign in. Acts 8:36³⁶And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? (Acts 8:36). Acts 10:47⁴⁷Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? (Acts 10:47).

Regeneration, the inward and spiritual grace of. John. 3:3, 5, 6. Rom. 6:3, 4, 11³Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? ⁴Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:3‑4)
¹¹Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:11).

Remission of sins, signified by. Acts. 2:38. Acts 22:16¹⁶And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. (Acts 22:16).

Unity of the Church effected by. 1 Cor. 12:13¹³For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:13). Gal. 3:27, 28²⁷For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. ²⁸There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:27‑28).

Confession of sin necessary to. Mat. 3:6.

Repentance necessary to. Acts 2:38³⁸Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (Acts 2:38).

Faith necessary to. Acts 8:37³⁷And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. (Acts 8:37). Acts 18:8⁸And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized. (Acts 18:8).

There is but one. Eph. 4:5⁵One Lord, one faith, one baptism, (Ephesians 4:5).

ADMINISTERED TO

Individuals. Acts 8:38³⁸And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. (Acts 8:38). Acts 9:18¹⁸And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. (Acts 9:18).

Households. Acts 16:15¹⁵And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us. (Acts 16:15). 1 Cor. 1: 16.

Emblematic of the influences of the Holy Ghost. Mat. 3:11. Tit. 3:5⁵Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; (Titus 3:5).

Typified. 1 Cor. 10:2²And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; (1 Corinthians 10:2). 1 Pet. 3:20, 21²⁰Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. ²¹The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: (1 Peter 3:20‑21).
