Antiquity of. Gen. 47:31³¹And he said, Swear unto me. And he sware unto him. And Israel bowed himself upon the bed's head. (Genesis 47:31). Exo. 8:3³And the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly, which shall go up and come into thine house, and into thy bedchamber, and upon thy bed, and into the house of thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thine ovens, and into thy kneadingtroughs: (Exodus 8:3).

Couches or divans used as. Job 7:13¹³When I say, My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall ease my complaint; (Job 7:13). Psa. 6:6⁶I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears. (Psalm 6:6).

A small pallet or mattress used as. 1 Sam. 19:15¹⁵And Saul sent the messengers again to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may slay him. (1 Samuel 19:15).

Considered necessary. 2 Kin. 4:10.

Supplied with pillows. 1 Sam. 19:13¹³And Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed, and put a pillow of goats' hair for his bolster, and covered it with a cloth. (1 Samuel 19:13). 1 Sam. 26:7⁷So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear stuck in the ground at his bolster: but Abner and the people lay round about him. (1 Samuel 26:7).

Covered with tapestry and linen. Pro. 7:16¹⁶I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt. (Proverbs 7:16).

Often perfumed. Pro. 7:17¹⁷I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. (Proverbs 7:17). Eze. 23:41⁴¹And satest upon a stately bed, and a table prepared before it, whereupon thou hast set mine incense and mine oil. (Ezekiel 23:41).

Of the poor covered with their upper garment. Exo. 22:26, 27²⁶If thou at all take thy neighbor's raiment to pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him by that the sun goeth down: ²⁷For that is his covering only, it is his raiment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto me, that I will hear; for I am gracious. (Exodus 22:26‑27). Deu. 24:12, 13.

USED FOR

Sleeping on. Job 33:15¹⁵In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; (Job 33:15). Luke 11:7⁷And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. (Luke 11:7).

Reclining on by day. 2 Sam. 4:5⁵And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of Ish-bosheth, who lay on a bed at noon. (2 Samuel 4:5), 2 Sam. 11:2²And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. (2 Samuel 11:2).

Reclining on at meals. 1 Sam. 28: 23-25. Amos 6:4-6⁴That lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall; ⁵That chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of music, like David; ⁶That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph. (Amos 6:4‑6). Luke 7: 36-38. John. 13:23.

Not used in affliction. 2 Sam. 12:16¹⁶David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth. (2 Samuel 12:16). 2 Sam. 13:31³¹Then the king arose, and tare his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent. (2 Samuel 13:31).

Persons sometimes took to, in grief, 1 Kin. 21:4. Hos. 7:14¹⁴And they have not cried unto me with their heart, when they howled upon their beds: they assemble themselves for corn and wine, and they rebel against me. (Hosea 7:14).

Saints meditate and praise God while on. Psa. 4:4⁴Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah. (Psalm 4:4). Psa. 149:5⁵Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds. (Psalm 149:5). SoS. 3:1.

The wicked devise mischief while on. Psa. 36:4⁴He deviseth mischief upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil. (Psalm 36:4). Mic. 2:1¹Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand. (Micah 2:1).

The slothful too fond ot. Pro. 26:14¹⁴As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed. (Proverbs 26:14).

Of the poor often sold for debt. Pro. 22:27²⁷If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee? (Proverbs 22:27).

Subject to ceremonial defilement. Lev. 15:4⁴Every bed, whereon he lieth that hath the issue, is unclean: and every thing, whereon he sitteth, shall be unclean. (Leviticus 15:4).

ILLUSTRATIVE

Of the grave. Isa. 57:2²He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness. (Isaiah 57:2).

(Made in darkness,) of extreme misery. Job 17:13¹³If I wait, the grave is mine house: I have made my bed in the darkness. (Job 17:13).

(Made in sickness,) of divine support and comfort. Psa. 41:3³The Lord will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness. (Psalm 41:3).

(Made on high,) of carnal security. Isa. 57:7⁷Upon a lofty and high mountain hast thou set thy bed: even thither wentest thou up to offer sacrifice. (Isaiah 57:7).

(Too short,) of plans which afford no rest or peace. Isa. 28:20²⁰For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it: and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it. (Isaiah 28:20).
