 The mention of the name of Levi leads to the introduction of the nature of God’s original covenant with him, and the statement of God’s own thought of the priesthood when He first established it. Connected with this is a principle of great importance, affirmed everywhere in the Scripture. It is, that in times of apostasy the real state of those in it can only be understood when tested by what it was at the outset. (Malachi 2 by E. Dennett)
