Pilgrims and Strangers.

Described. John 17:16¹⁶They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. (John 17:16).

Saints are called to be. Gen. 12:1¹Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will show thee: (Genesis 12:1), with Acts 7:3³And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall show thee. (Acts 7:3). Luke 14:26, 27, 33²⁶If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. ²⁷And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:26‑27)
³³So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:33).

All saints are. Psa. 39:12¹²Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were. (Psalm 39:12). 1 Pet. 1:1¹Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, (1 Peter 1:1).

Saints confess themselves. 1 Chron. 29:15¹⁵For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding. (1 Chronicles 29:15). Psa. 39:12¹²Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were. (Psalm 39:12). Psa. 119:19¹⁹I am a stranger in the earth: hide not thy commandments from me. (Psalm 119:19). Heb. 11:13¹³These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. (Hebrews 11:13).

As SAINTS THEY

Have the example of Christ. Luke 9:58⁵⁸And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. (Luke 9:58).

Are strengthened by God. Deut. 33:25²⁵Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be. (Deuteronomy 33:25). Psa. 84:6, 7⁶Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools. ⁷They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appeareth before God. (Psalm 84:6‑7).

Are actuated by faith. Heb. 11:9⁹By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: (Hebrews 11:9).

Have their faces toward Zion. Jer. 50:5⁵They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come, and let us join ourselves to the Lord in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten. (Jeremiah 50:5).

Keep the promises in view. Heb. 11:13¹³These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. (Hebrews 11:13).

Forsake all for Christ. Matt. 19:27²⁷Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore? (Matthew 19:27).

Look for a heavenly country. Heb. 11:16¹⁶But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. (Hebrews 11:16).

Look for a heavenly city. Heb. 11:10¹⁰For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. (Hebrews 11:10).

Pass their sojourning in fear. 1 Peter 1:17¹⁷And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: (1 Peter 1:17).

Rejoice in the statutes of God. Psa. 119:54⁵⁴Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage. (Psalm 119:54).

Pray for direction. Psa. 43:3³O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles. (Psalm 43:3). Jer. 50:5⁵They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come, and let us join ourselves to the Lord in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten. (Jeremiah 50:5).

Have a heavenly conversation. Phi. 3:20.

Hate worldly fellowship. Psa. 120:5,6⁵Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar! ⁶My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace. (Psalm 120:5‑6).

Are not mindful of this world. Heb. 11:15¹⁵And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. (Hebrews 11:15).

Are not at home in this world. Heb. 11:9⁹By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: (Hebrews 11:9).

Shine as lights in the world. Phi. 2:15.

Invite others to go with them. Num. 10:29²⁹And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses' father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which the Lord said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the Lord hath spoken good concerning Israel. (Numbers 10:29).

Are exposed to persecution. Psa. 120:5-7⁵Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar! ⁶My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace. ⁷I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war. (Psalm 120:5‑7). John 17:14¹⁴I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. (John 17:14).

Should abstain from fleshly lusts. 1 Peter 2:11¹¹Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; (1 Peter 2:11).

Should have their treasure in heaven. Matt. 6:19¹⁹Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: (Matthew 6:19). Luke 12:33³³Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. (Luke 12:33). Col. 3:1,2¹If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. ²Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. (Colossians 3:1‑2).

Should not be over anxious about worldly things. Matt. 6:25²⁵Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? (Matthew 6:25).

Long for their pilgrimage to end. Psa. 55:6⁶And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest. (Psalm 55:6). 2 Cor. 5:1-8¹For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. ²For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: ³If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. ⁴For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. ⁵Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. ⁶Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: ⁷(For we walk by faith, not by sight:) ⁸We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:1‑8).

Die in faith. Heb. 11:13¹³These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. (Hebrews 11:13).

The world is not worthy of. Heb. 11:38³⁸(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. (Hebrews 11:38).

God is not ashamed to be called their God. Heb. 11:16¹⁶But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. (Hebrews 11:16).

Typified. Israel, Ex. 6:4⁴And I have also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, wherein they were strangers. (Exodus 6:4). Ex. 12:11¹¹And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the Lord's passover. (Exodus 12:11).

Exemplified. Abraham, Gen. 23:4⁴I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight. (Genesis 23:4). Acts 7:4, 5⁴Then came he out of the land of the Chaldeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell. ⁵And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child. (Acts 7:4‑5). Jacob, Gen. 47:9⁹And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage. (Genesis 47:9). Saints of old, 1 Chron. 29:15¹⁵For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.
