The breaking up or tilling of the earth. Jer. 4:3³For thus saith the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns. (Jeremiah 4:3). Hos. 10:12¹²Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you. (Hosea 10:12).

Noah the supposed inventor of. Gen. 5:29²⁹And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord hath cursed. (Genesis 5:29).

PERFORMED

By a plow. Luke 9:62⁶²And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God. (Luke 9:62).

With oxen. 1 Sam. 14:14¹⁴And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armorbearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were an half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow. (1 Samuel 14:14). Job 1:14¹⁴And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them: (Job 1:14).

During the cold winter season. Prov. 20:4⁴The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing. (Proverbs 20:4).

In long and straight furrows. Psa. 129:3³The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows. (Psalm 129:3).

Generally by servants. Isa. 61:5⁵And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers. (Isaiah 61:5). Luke 17:7⁷But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat? (Luke 17:7).

Sometimes by the owner of the land himself. 1 Kin. 19:19.

With an ox and an ass yoked together forbidden to the Jews. Deut. 22:10¹⁰Thou shalt not plow with an ox and an ass together. (Deuteronomy 22:10).

Difficulty of, on rocky ground. Amos 6:12¹²Shall horses run upon the rock? will one plow there with oxen? for ye have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into hemlock: (Amos 6:12).

Followed by harrowing and sowing. Isa. 28:24, 25²⁴Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and break the clods of his ground? ²⁵When he hath made plain the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and the rie in their place? (Isaiah 28:24‑25).

ILLUSTRATIVE

Of repentance and reformation. Jer. 4:3³For thus saith the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns. (Jeremiah 4:3).

Of peace and prosperity. Isa. 2:4⁴And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. (Isaiah 2:4). Mic. 4:3³And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. (Micah 4:3).

Of a severe course of affliction. Hos. 10:11¹¹And Ephraim is as an heifer that is taught, and loveth to tread out the corn; but I passed over upon her fair neck: I will make Ephraim to ride; Judah shall plow, and Jacob shall break his clods. (Hosea 10:11).

Of a course of sin. Job 4:8⁸Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same. (Job 4:8). Hos. 10:13¹³Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye have eaten the fruit of lies: because thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men. (Hosea 10:13).

Of the labor of ministers. 1 Cor. 9:10¹⁰Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. (1 Corinthians 9:10).

(Attention and constancy required in,) of continued devotedness: Luke 9:62⁶²And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God. (Luke 9:62).
